Full Job Description

Based at Ricardo Shoreham Technical Centre in the UK, this is an internal trainee programme in the analysis of vehicle emissions, fuels and lubricants with parallel study in Chemistry. The qualification will be gained from the University of Kent by distance learning, so you will need to be able to manage your time and meet the deadlines set for course submissions.

The role will report to the departmental manager. It will require work in several areas:

  • the analytical laboratory, operating instruments such as GC, HPLC, IC, TGA, ICP-OES

  • around the site installing and operating real-time measurement instruments such as FTIR

  • on-vehicles' measuring real-world emissions with portable emissions measurement systems (PEMS) and other novel equipment approaches.


  • Where relevant, the programme will consist of rotations to other areas of Ricardo.

    Training will be provided for elements of the role that are not directly aligned with the educational aspect of the position.

  • Technician Scientist L5 Apprenticeship Standard

  • FdSc in Applied Chemistry

  • One day per week online study with The University of Kent

  • Two on campus Summer Schools

    Communication skills, IT skills, Attention to detail, Accuracy, Manual dexterity, Science&Environmental interest, GCSE or equivalent English (Grade 4/C) Essential

  • GCSE or equivalent Maths (Grade 4/C) Essential
    A Level or equivalent Chemistry (Grade 4/C) Essential
