Full Job Description

You will be responsible for the design of engine installations ranging from bare engines to fully standalone industrial power units with engine mounts, cooling packs, intake systems and integral aftertreatment systems.

You will work with the sales team to understand the product brief, produce concept designs, review and assess them, produce fully detailed designs, undertake calculations and basic analysis as required and document your work. The role will report into the Engineering Manager.

Responsibilities:

Design and Release

  • Create detailed 3D models in CAD using best practice modelling techniques.


  • Create detailed 2D drawings to ISO standards, using appropriate dimensioning and tolerance schemes.


  • Work in context of the engine system to propose novel solutions to the challenges faced in design.


  • Ensure part manufacturing method and controls are clear on the drawing.


  • Conduct engineering calculations and basic analysis to ensure the component design requirements are met.


  • Document your work clearly, showing considerations made to produce the design.


  • Communicate well with the team in both written and verbal forms.


  • Capture lessons learns on the component design for future reference.


  • Feed into the DFMEA for the system and component, including completing the design actions from this review.


  • Work with other functions, manufacturing, purchasing, service, quality to gather their requirements and develop the design to meet their requirements.


  • Work with internal customers to integrate designs into the final product.


  • Manage your day to complete your duties in an effective manner.


  • Lead, plan and report on design tasks.


  • Research and Development
  • Keep on track of the state-of-the-art technical development of engines and components.


  • Understand the effectiveness and importance of relevant benchmarking.


  • Create clean sheet concept designs from first principles.

    In addition to a passion for engineering, experience of delivery, and a desire to be 'hands-on' with design from concept to completion, the candidates will:

  • Have a degree in an associated mechanical engineering discipline, with a sound understanding of Mechanical Engineering principles (showing an attention to detail, and being data driven).


  • Have previous experience in engine component design and processes, component tolerancing (GD&T etc).


  • Demonstrate use of CAE tools and 1D tools to inform design decisions.


  • Familiar with a range of manufacturing techniques employed in the automotive environment.


  • Experience with Siemens NX and Teamcenter preferred, similar CAD packages considered, internal training available.


  • Be able to manage your time to deliver your work effectively.


  • Demonstrate an ability to communicate clearly and concisely.


  • Show flexibility - the role requires travel to customer and supplier sites.


  • Be willing to contribute in a dynamic, collaborative, and cross-discipline team setting.

  • Experience of engine component design in NX or similar, using CAE tools to inform design direction.


  • Clear understanding of ICE operating principles (e.g. mechanical/electromechanical design and thermodynamics).


  • Experience in use of data management systems such as Siemens TeamCenter or similar.


  • Sound knowledge automotive manufacturing methods and with implications on design.


  • Be a team player with experience of leading designs.
