Full Job Description

About this Role We are currently seeking an Assistant Librarian & Assistant Head of Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) to start as soon as possible. The Assistant Librarian/Assistant Head of EPQ is part of a small team responsible for the operation of the library and for running the EPQ programme. As well as traditional library tasks, the role involves helping to manage the EPQ programme and supervising an EPQ group through the entire process. This is an exciting opportunity for a champion of reading to work in a sector-leading school library and to assist ambitious young people in taking their first steps in academic research. This role would suit an organised, conscientious people-person who loves books and relishes the joys and challenges of independent research. This position would suit a recent graduate, someone considering a move into education or a librarian seeking a further challenge. Experience gained in this role has enabled previous incumbents to move on to more senior roles in university libraries and the Civil Service. There is also the opportunity of having a tutor group, if desired. Principal Duties & Responsibilities: Summary of Library duties, which will include but are not limited to:

  • Supervising the Library and standing in for the Head of the Library in her absence;
  • Helping organise and run activities and lunchtime clubs in the library;
  • Supporting reading for pleasure and recommending books for both staff and pupils;
  • Supporting participation in the Southern Schools Book Award (SSBA) with the Year 9 students;
  • Assisting with the creation of display and marketing material;
  • Helping to organise events, including the SSBA Presentation Evening;
  • Helping to co-ordinate the library's social media presence, including the weekly newsletter;
  • Supporting the development of information literacy within the school;
  • Cataloguing, processing and circulating resources using the Library Management System;
  • Demonstrating Library's resources and using them to assist pupils seeking information;
  • Maintaining the Library as a tidy, accessible and vibrant space;
  • Managing pupils using the library;
  • Assisting with Library administrative tasks;
  • Other library tasks and duties as may reasonably be required by the Head of the Library.
  • Summary of EPQ duties, which will include but are not limited to:
  • Helping to oversee the EPQ programme including any administration involved;
  • Supporting the team of EPQ supervisors including meeting with designated EPQ supervisors on a fortnightly basis;
  • Supervising your own EPQ group including delivering the taught skills programme and marking the projects;
  • Disseminating a weekly email to EPQ supervisors;
  • Helping to organize the presentation afternoon;
  • Helping to internally moderate EPQ projects.
  • We welcome applications from candidates with the ability to engage with young people who possess a genuine interest in supporting pupils to achieve their potential. This is a role that brings a lot of variety throughout the day, suiting someone with a depth of general knowledge who enjoys working with people. A Humanities or Sciences degree would be a bonus. If you are excited by this opportunity we encourage you to submit your application ASAP. Applications will be considered as they are received, and the recruitment process will close once outstanding candidates are identified. Hurstpierpoint College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service
