Full Job Description

The Hand unit within the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham is a regional hand centre accepting patients with acute and complex needs.

We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced senior Upper Limb Therapist (Occupational or Physiotherapist) to join our expanding team. You will join a large Upper Limb therapy team to assist in the delivery of a high quality service and care. You will be responsible for assistance in the general management of the team and service, whilst providing high quality clinical care of patients

This post will be based within our large hand therapy rehabilitation department where there is a vibrant and supportive team of specialist Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Therapy assistants. There will also be the opportunity to work within multidisciplinary hand clinics alongside Consultant Hand Surgeons who run specialist clinics for assessment and management of traumatic hand injuries in addition to management of inpatient hand injuries.

You will need to have experience in assessing and treating a variety of hand / upper limb injuries and conditions and have good splinting skills. You must be keen to develop your Hand Therapy clinical skills further whilst developing greater responsibilities in caseload, leadership, service development and research., 1. To perform as an autonomous practitioner undertaking a specific clinical caseload with expert assessment and treatment of patients who often have highly complex and/or chronic presentations, using expert clinical reasoning skills to determine diagnosis, differential diagnosis, prognosis, and optimal upper limb/cervical/thoracic spine therapy management.

2. To act as a source of expertise on the management of patients with acute and chronic conditions within own area of specialism and provide an advisory/consult service within and external to the Trust and to professional colleagues Consultants, GPs, Nurses, and other healthcare workers.

3. To lead education and training, clinical effectiveness, audit, and research programmes within the service to develop the clinical skills and knowledge of staff and students working within the clinical section and to contribute to the knowledge base across the whole service.

4. To assist with the planning, co-ordinate, deliver and evaluate the in-service education programme for all staff.

5. To establish and evaluate appropriate clinical outcome measures within the clinical section.

6. To support the Therapy, Lead in planning and achieving optimum service delivery and organisation in the short and long term

7. To develop and maintain good multi professional working relationships across UHBFT and with the patient/family/carers and community services.
