Full Job Description
An opportunity has arisen for a Practitioner Psychologist to join the Heart and Lung Transplant Psychology Service based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
The Heart and Lung transplant service works with patients with advanced heart failure and respiratory disease. Patients who are not suitable for heart transplant at the time of their assessment, may be offered a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) as a bridge to transplant. As a psychologist, your role will be to consider how to offer a timely and effective service to meet the differing needs of the patient populations across the patient pathway. These include; pre-transplant assessments, patients on the national waiting list for transplant, post-transplant recipients, and those living with an LVAD.
There is ample opportunity to offer direct psychological interventions, whilst working collaboratively with the MDT. You would be working under an 8B Practitioner Psychologist lead for the Heart and Lung Transplant Service. The role also provides an exciting opportunity to collaborate and network with other psychologists working in similar services nationally. You will be welcomed by Heart and Lung Transplant colleagues who are keen to support in the continued development of the service. You will also be a valued colleague in our Clinical Health Psychology Service and the Psychological Professionals workforce at BSMHFT., You will need to demonstrate a highly developed understanding of the psychological impact of heart and respiratory failure and the need for advanced therapies and how pre-existing vulnerabilities may impact upon the impact of such physical health difficulties, as well as being able to adapt your psychological interventions accordingly. With transplant recipients being under the care of the transplant service for life, specific consideration will need to be given to how to tailor psychology input accordingly, along with the ability to work flexibly across outpatient and inpatient settings.
You will have experience in working with patients with physical health conditions. You will be working closely with doctors, nurses and allied health professionals to provide high quality care, and you will need strong skills in consultation, supervision and teaching as part of our multidisciplinary teamwork. This role will require face-to-face work, as well as skills in being able to deliver psychological assessment, including pre-surgical assessment, psychological interventions and teaching in a variety of formats, including via the telephone and video link.
This is a 15 hours per week post but there may be opportunities for additional hours in other specialties - please do indicated in your application if this would be of interest.
