Full Job Description

This is an exciting 9 month fixed term / secondment opportunity for a highly motivated and multi-skilled Clinical Team Leader to join the South Devon & Torbay Mental Health Centre at Torbay Hospital. The role will be based on Haytor ward., Haytor Wards multi-disciplinary team provide a service for adults with a mental health illness. We are a busy, motivated and interesting team, who value working together. The Clinical Team Leader role is essential in supporting the team to achieve its aim.,

  • To assist the Ward Manager in setting up standards, promoting change and developing nursing practice, supervision and audit.
  • To deputise for the manager in his/her absence.
  • To ensure the delivery of high standards of nursing care to all service users, in accordance with evidence based professional practice and trust policies., Communication and Working Relationship Skills
  • To have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Work in partnership with all health, social care professionals and other stake holders, maintaining effective communication that benefits the patients / service users wellbeing.Liaise with carers, families and user groups and representatives.
  • Liaise with carers, families and user groups and representatives.
  • Contribute to the safe and effective day to day operations of the service including the handling of clinical enquiries.
  • Working with clinical teams to support and encourage alternatives to treatment other than acute inpatient admissions, in partnership with appropriate clinical teams (e.g. Crisis & Home Treatment, Community Teams and Liaison Psychiatry).
  • Attendance at ward rounds, focusing on care planning and timely discharge.
  • Analytical and Judgemental Skills
  • To liaise with the local Community Mental Health Services to facilitate care pathways.
  • To develop expertise in the management of complex cases.
  • Planning and Organisational Skills
  • To act as shift coordinator.
  • To deputise for the manager in his/her absence
  • Lead and supervise others, undertake PDRs and manage absence
  • Assist with the development and delivery and evaluation of evidence based treatments.
  • To participate in training and development of junior staff within the clinical environment.
  • Monitoring of clinical work.
  • To develop the team to maximise skills.
  • To ensure the appropriate delegation of tasks taking into consideration the skills and grade of staff members.
  • Produce staffing rotas, taking into consideration budgetary requirements, skill/gender grade mix to meet clinical need.
  • Responsibility for Patient/Client Care, Treatment and Therapy
  • To ensure that care plans are implemented and reviewed as part of ongoing assessment.
  • To ensure that robust, up to date risk assessments are carried out by the relevant staff.
  • To ensure standards of care are maintained to the highest level.
  • To promote good practice in the management of acutely disturbed clients.
  • To adhere to the NMC Code of Conduct, Government and Trust policies and procedures.
  • Participate in safeguarding adults and children to level 3 as set out in Safeguarding adults and children and young people: roles and competencies for Health Care staff
  • To maintain professionalism at all times whilst being non-judgmental.
  • Responsibility for Policy and Service Development Implementation
  • To work with the Ward Manager to review, update and implement standards and policies for use in adult inpatient settings as appropriate.
  • To participate in ongoing training and education progress.
  • To be aware of current initiatives in inpatient care.
  • To promote service changes with a positive and professional attitude.
  • To explore innovative ways of delivering and improving patient care.
  • Responsibility for Finance, Equipment and Other Resources
  • Establish an efficient working environment, making the most effective user of staff, supplies, equipment and services.
  • To demonstrate effective risk management.
  • To use Trust resources in a sustainable, cost effective and appropriate way.
  • Responsibility for Human Resources, e.g. Supervision, Training, HR Advice and Management
  • To provide supervision and appraisals for qualified staff.
  • To demonstrate effective leadership/ management skills.
  • To participate in the role of mentor to students.
  • To participate in audits.
  • To develop and empower junior staff within the team.
  • To participate in the role of Preceptor to newly qualified staff (where appropriate)
  • Responsibility for Information Resources and Administrative Duties
  • To ensure accurate documentation.
  • To have working knowledge of the Care Notes and associated systems.
  • The post holder will ensure that clinical/care records both written and electronic are accurate and are consistent with professional and organisational requirements.
  • To participate in formulating and providing reports for other professionals such as panel for continuing care etc.

  • To participate in ongoing training and education progress.
  • To demonstrate evidence based practice and participate in research/audit/pilot projects.
  • To be aware of current initiatives in inpatient care.

  • Report any observed incident of unprofessional behaviour, accident/incident, untoward occurrence and faulty equipment immediately to ward manager.
  • To take an active role in own supervision and continuous professional development.

    Able to undertake nursing procedures e.g. manual handling, physical restraint
  • To attend mandatory training for either 5 day or 3 day restraint, Breakaway, Manual handling etc., Able to problem solve and assist others in this process
  • Effectively manage admission/discharges
  • Ability to assess and manage risk effectively, Substantial post registration experience
  • Experience as a Band 5 in an acute inpatient setting
  • Experience working within an MDT
  • Clinical Supervision and Mentoring Experience
  • Experience of managing staff
  • Mentoring students in line with professional requirements, Knowledge and skills in providing supervision
  • Knowledge of ordering, storing and administering required medications
  • Knowledge of possible side effects of medication
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1987 (including updates)
  • Knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act & Deprivation of Liberty safeguards
  • Multi-Disciplinary Working
  • Understanding of Recovery principles in Mental Health
  • Knowledge and understanding of both adult and childrens safeguarding guidance, Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to form positive therapeutic relationships with service users, carers and other professional bodies.
  • Excellent IT skills
  • Able to provide and receive complex sensitive information in relation to staff, service users, families and carers
  • Ability to engage in and lead (when required) MDT meetings
  • Planning & Organisational Skills,
  • Lead and supervise staff to provide a high quality and effective service
  • Good liaison skills and ability to manage difficult and complex situations
  • Effectively able to manage own time and that of the team
