Full Job Description

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) was formed in 2017 following the merger of Central Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT) and the University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust (UHSM). With the inclusion of North Manchester General Hospital from the 1st April 2021, our organisation provides a single hospital service across the City of Manchester, where these changes will make a real difference to the health outcomes and quality of life for the communities we serve. As a result, it is an exciting and challenging period in the delivery of health and social care in Manchester and one that provides a wealth of opportunity., We are seeking to appoint a Consultant Histopathologist to join our experienced and highly motivated team at the Oxford Road Campus (ORC, although there may be a requirement to work across our other sites). This 10 PA post will join the histopathology reporting team with particular contribution to the gynae pathology sub-specialist service. There may be an opportunity if desired to contribute to other sub-specialist areas in Histopathology according to the experience of the candidate and the needs of the department, You will join a team of 22 other full and part time Consultants in the Adult Histopathology Department at ORC who provide a reporting service for a variety of specialities including Gynaecological, Gastrointestinal, Dermatopathology, Head and Neck, Ophthalmic and Urology. The main responsibilities of this post would be:

  • Together with other Consultant colleagues, be responsible for providing subspecialised histopathology for its clinical users (Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, Tameside & Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust and local General Practices). This may include review of slides of patients who are referred in to MFT for further investigation or treatment from other hospitals. The appointee will have the opportunity to participate in cancer multidisciplinary team meetings (MDTs) in line with their areas of subspecialisation which may involve travel to other sites.

  • Participate in Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching and training. The Trust is committed to teaching Specialty Trainees in Histopathology under the aegis of HENW (Health Education North West). The appointee will also be expected to teach histopathology to other allied health professionals. In line with this, there will be provision to review the SPA allocation in the job plan if an appointee takes up such extra responsibilities leading to increased teaching duties.

MFT is England's largest NHS Trust with a turnover of £2.6bn & is on a different scale than most other NHS Trusts. We're creating an exceptional integrated health & social care system for the 1 million patients who rely on our services every year.

  • Bringing together 10 hospitals & community services from across Manchester, Trafford & beyond, we champion collaborative working & transformation, encouraging our 28,000 workforce to pursue their most ambitious goals. We set standards that other Trusts seek to emulate so you'll benefit from a scale of opportunity that is nothing short of extraordinary.

We've also created a digitally enabled organisation to improve clinical quality, patient & staff experience, operational effectiveness & driving research and innovation through the introduction of Hive; our brand-new Electronic Patient Record system which we've launched in September 2022.

We're proud to be a major academic Research Centre & Education provider, providing you with a robust infrastructure to encourage and facilitate high-quality research programmes. What's more, we're excited to be embarking on our new Green Plan which will set out how MFT continues to play its part in making healthcare more sustainable.

At MFT, we create and foster a culture of inclusion and belonging, provide equal opportunities for career development that are fair, open and transparent, protecting your health and wellbeing and shaping the future of our organisation together.
