Full Job Description

This post is for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week to providecare of patients with Head and Neck, Thyroid, and non-melanoma skin tumours from across Greater Manchester and Cheshire. The appointee will be based at The Christie and will provide senior Medical Oncology input to theHead and Neck Oncology consultant group. They will join a current team of 1 Medical Oncology and 8 Clinical Oncology consultants specialising in Head and Neck, Thyroid and Skin cancers and will be an active member of the MDTs. These oncologists manage all H&N, Thyroid and non melanaoma skin cancers diagnosed within the Greater Manchester and Cheshire Cancer Network. The Thyroid team also take referrals from Lancashire. Systemic therapy is primarily delivered centrally. All Disease Group consultants work as part of a multi-disciplinary team supporting the delivery of this work including one Nurse Clinicians, one Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP), four Clinical Nurse Specialists, Research Nurses, Clinical Fellows, Specialist Trainees, Pharmacists and Advanced Health Professionals in dietetics and Speech and Language Therapy. The appointee will be expected to deliver systemic therapy in Head and Neck tumours including non-melanoma skin tumours as a sub-specialty. The appointee will be based at The Christie and will provide input to the following areas of delivery: · Outpatient clinics -Providing support with waiting times across Greater Manchester and Cheshire · SACT Services · Inpatient Services - primarily Wards 11, 12, 4) and the Oncology Assessment Unit · Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings · Team meetings · Educational meetings · Audit The role will be responsible for:

  • Management of patients with Head and Neck, Thyroid and Skin cancers receiving standard therapy including treatment decisions and ongoing care.
  • Participating in all relevant aspects of clinical governance, including maintaining up to date protocols, guidelines and clinical audit
  • Contributing to current research projects and establish new opportunities to expand and develop research within the team.
  • Revision and development of evidence-based protocols for patients and undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of their patients.
  • Maintaining a level of continuing professional development consistent with the recommendations of the Royal College of Physicians
  • Actively contributing to the training of junior doctors and other multi-disciplinary team members in both in-patient and outpatient departments., Consultants in the department participate in an on-call rota that involves a commitment to a full week (1: 20 rotation). The on-call consultant provides input to the acute admissions unit at the weekend. The trust is currently reviewing the on call commitment and this may be subject to change in the future.

Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK. This is a new substantive post. The Medical Oncologist appointed will work with the existing H&N/Thyroid and Skin teams to provide a comprehensive clinical service for patients. This includes patients in the outpatient, inpatient and ambulatory settings, delivering Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) whilst also providing Medical Oncology input to the relevant MDTs. The post-holder will have clinical commitments in Head and Neck/Thyroid oncology and non-melanoma skin tumours, being actively involved in these disease groups and the treatment of their patients.The post-holder will provide both chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments and will also contribute medical oncology leadership to the electro-chemotherapy service. Support and training can be provided by the current H&N and Thyroid Medical/Clinical Oncologists if required. The postholder will be expected to see approximately 220 new patients per year. The appointee will have access to office accommodation and access to secretarial support.
