Full Job Description

We are looking for an enthusiastic, passionate and well-qualified German linguist to collaborate closely with the Head of Language to support the teaching and learning within the school. The role will involve working with students on an individual and group basis to help them develop their language skills and knowledge and support the languages department. You will assist in the planning and delivery of language lessons, including preparing teaching materials, resources and activities, and help to create a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages student engagement and participation. We are looking for someone who:

  • Takes a keen interest in the welfare of the pupils and shows a clear commitment to safeguarding children
  • Is fluent in German (to native level) and English, with excellent communication skills in both languages
  • Has a commitment to professional development and is fully informed of current educational initiatives relating to MFL
  • Has experience of working with young people in an educational or similar setting
  • Has an interest in the target language and culture, with the ability to share this enthusiasm with students
  • Has exceptional organisation
  • Has a positive and flexible approach to work, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • MFL Department Information The Department of Modern Foreign Languages is a leading department at Francis Holland School. It is the largest department in the school, consisting of nine teachers and three language assistants as well as a visiting teacher in Italian. Being located in an area of central London close to embassies, the French Lycée and other cultural centres, as well as to the City, we benefit from a cosmopolitan intake, attracting many girls from a bilingual or multilingual background who are always very open to discovering new cultures and to learning new languages. All girls learn French from Years 7 to 9, with many of them opting to take it to IGCSE. In Year 8 a second language is introduced, with pupils choosing either Spanish or German. All girls need to select at least one of their languages at IGCSE, but many will study two. MFL is a popular subject at the school and many girls benefit from the bilingual curriculum and clubs that take place for native speakers of French, German and Spanish. Results at IGCSE level are always amongst the very best in school, and we pride ourselves on opposing the national trend of declining numbers at A level. At Francis Holland School, A level subject choices for all languages is strong. All MFL department members contribute to the enrichment activities, and we encourage all staff to take an active role in the trips abroad. The department has a long-standing tradition of excellence and commitment from its staff and a positive, collaborative approach to both the curriculum and co-curricular activities is vital. For more information and to apply, please visit our vacancies page. Closing date: 8.00am on Wednesday, 23rd April 2025. First interviews: Monday, 28th April 2025 (Teams). Final interviews: Friday, 2nd May 2025 (in person). The school reserves the right to appoint at any stage. The Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. Statutory checks including a satisfactory DBS certificate and references will be a requirement for this role. This role is classed as regulated activity with children as it involves teaching, training or supervising children on a day-to-day basis and is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act, 1974.
