Main duties of the job The post holder will support the Associate Directors of Pharmacy, Deputy Heads of Pharmacy at Newham University Hospital and Whipps Cross University Hospital and Highly Specialist Pharmacists within the team to manage the professional, clinical and technical input of pharmacy into the Surgical and Critical Care directorate at both hospitals and provide professional support for the pharmacy surgery and anaesthetic teams across the trust.


• MPharm or equivalent
• Registered as a pharmacist with the GPhC
• Independent prescribing qualification
• Postgraduate Pharmacy Qualification or equivalent experience (minimum postgraduate diploma level)

• Extensive post registration hospital experience
• Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide patient care
• Ability to undertake and facilitate quality improvement, reflective practice, teaching and CPD
• Experience appraising staff and giving feedback
• Experience as a clinical pharmacy tutor, presenter or lecturer
• Significant experience of working as a clinical pharmacy practitioner in an acute hospital NHS setting
• Operational management of a service to a substantial teaching hospital or District General Hospital (DGH)
• Experience of leading and supervising research, quality improvement or audit projects
• Planning and implementing significant service developments and organisational change
• Experience of managing large groups of staff
• Operational management experience in a complex environment
• Experience of successfully leading and implementing service improvement and change projects
• Experience of managing a budget
• Ability to understand complex issues, problem solve and propose solutions
• To have been involved in bringing about change to a service / department
Desirable criteria
• Experience of working in outpatient clinics
• Successful performance as a directorate / team leader Surgery pharmacist in a previous post, Demonstrated expert knowledge covering a range of services
• Knowledge of medicines management systems at ward level
• Up to date knowledge of legislation relevant to pharmacy practice, e.g. controlled drugs, Health and Safety at Work
• Understanding of the pharmaceutical care needs of Surgery and Theatres patients
• Sound knowledge of drugs and therapeutics in Surgery, at Mastery level
• Thorough understanding of clinical governance and clinical risk management
• Knowledge of the medication and prescribing issues at the interface of primary and secondary care
• Knowledge of the law and relevant guidance relating to medicines, pharmacy, rationing decisions in the NHS, Payment by Results (PbR) and commissioning
• Knowledge and awareness of current national standards, guidelines and service delivery issues relevant to the directorate's patients
• Understanding of stock control systems
• Knowledge of Safe and Secure Handling of Medicines requirements
• Understanding of the importance of adherence to SOPs and legislation
• Demonstrates a good understanding of patient safety initiatives
