Full Job Description

We seek an expert nurse with strong clinical, communication and leadership abilities to join the leukaemia CNS team on a 1 year fixed term basis to cover maternity leave. We care for patients aged 20+ with acute and chronic leukaemia, bone marrow failure, aplastic anaemia and myeloproliferative neoplasms. UCLH is also a specialist centre for young adults, with dedicated facilities to enable us to best support this age group. The leukaemia CNS team comprises 8 CNS and a Macmillan cancer support worker. It sits within a wider team of haematology clinical nurse specialists and their respective MDTs. We have an office base at 250 Euston Road. We manage patients across various clinical areas and sites (wards, clinics, ambulatory and day care). The CNS is an advanced practitioner who is usually the key worker for patients on complex treatment pathways. We counsel patients with a new diagnosis or at disease progression, explaining treatment options, assessing suitability for therapies and information needs. We assess patients in various nurse clinics and attend multi professional clinics. We plan and schedule treatments, troubleshoot issues and remain an important source of continuity and support to patients through their cancer treatment and beyond.Main duties of the job A significant part of the workload is by telephone, assessing patients who are often unwell. We also run a significant number of CNS clinics. An important part of the role is communication with the MDT, shared and primary care. The CNS delivers level 2 psychological skills necessary to respond to the many forms and kinds of psychological distress experienced by people with cancer. We lead on the assessment of holistic and written information needs. We are a specialist educational resource and aid the professional development of junior nurses in the department. Offering crucial support to the team are Macmillan Cancer Support Workers, PAs, data managers and MDT co-ordinators. There is a dedicated haematology telephone line for patients to call for all queries, which is run by a team of administrators and protects the CNS from excessive administrative work. The haematology CNS team is part of the cancer nursing service at UCLH and we are fortunate to be able to support university based and in house educational pathways. You will be supported to access clinical supervision.
