Full Job Description

The appointment will be for 10 programmed activities and will initially include resident on-call duties at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital site. This is likely to change to a non-resident pattern during the duration of the contract. This is a 10 PA post with 8 DCC (including on-calls) and 2 SPA (including lead areas, CPD, teaching, audits). It envisaged that the successful candidate will complement the clinical and administrative roles within the department. There is attending consultant responsible for intensive care, high dependency and special care each week. There is also a fourth attending consultant who is responsible for the postnatal wards, neonatal outpatient clinics and antenatal counselling. The consultants support 22 tier 1/tier 2 doctors and 1 ANNP to ensure the delivery of training, knowledge and skill acquisition, and ensure consultant presence at all shift handovers. During the attending weeks covering the neonatal unit, the responsible consultants are expected to conduct daily ward rounds and at least twice daily handovers. The post will contribute fully to the consultant rota and will support the existing workload in neonatal intensive care and following NICU expansion., The post-holder will share responsibility with the existing consultant staff to: · Participate in the administration and development of neonatal intensive care at the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital as well as the Postnatal Ward with the service director and consultant colleagues. · Carry out up to 4 neonatal out-patient clinics in each 7 week cycle (in weeks SCBU and PNW). These are joint clinics. There is a very well organised, fully comprehensive paediatric outpatient department. One tier 1 and one tier 2 grade trainee are in attendance but essentially for teaching purposes. · Clinically supervise and train junior medical staff in the care of sick babies on the Neonatal Unit and in resuscitation of babies on the Labour Ward and in Theatre when on service. · Share educational supervision, mentorship and induction of junior doctors. · Offer advice to junior doctors, nurses, midwives, AHPs and referring paediatricians · Support the neonatal surgical service and further strengthen the links with the paediatric surgeons. · Advise local general practitioners and midwives in matters relating to infant care and provide teaching as required. · Undertake in-hospital training/teaching of medical staff, nursing staff and midwifery staff. · Support child psychology and social services staff in the weekly 'Family Matters Meeting' and support discharge planning with the neonatal community liaison team and 7 day outreach neonatal community service.

This is part of the Neonatal service expansion at Chelsea and Westminster. The successful candidate will join an experienced and forward-thinking Consultant team, with a leading academic Neonatal research department as part of Imperial College London.   • Chelsea and Westminster has one of the two neonatal intensive care units in the North West London Neonatal Operational Delivery Network, and is the designated unit for neonatal surgery. The neonatal unit is one of the largest in London with 37 cots comprising 12 ITU, 12 HDU and 13 SCBU commissioned cots, with 12 ITU/12 HDU operational capacity. The unit currently looks after approximately 600 babies and has a combined 6,600 ITU/HDU bed days a year. Transitional care is delivered on the postnatal ward. There are 11 NHS consultant neonatologists (including this post), and 4 academics including three Professors of Neonatal Medicine and a Clinical Senior Lecturer.
