Full Job Description

The senior mechanical engineer role will deliver the mechanical design content of water industry projects, working on a remote / office hybrid basis from our Durham office, as part of our MEICA Design department. Working with our Water Utility Clients including Severn Trent Water, United Utilities, Northumbrian Water, Scottish Water, etc, and working closely with our Project Managers and Construction Team This will include the delivery of the mechanical design for water industry projects at all stages, from feasibility and optioneering through to detailed designs for construction. The senior mechanical engineer will be responsible to produce mechanical design packages for handover to our Construction team, including writing the works information documentation, site reports, pump calculations, equipment specifications, installation specifications, lifting strategies, AutoCAD drawings such as P&ID's, pump and pipework arrangements, etc. Responsibilities

  • Develop effective concept design solutions that are consistent with the project brief.
  • Undertake a wide range of design work on all aspects of the functions design and maintenance.
  • Implement effective, value for money and innovative design solutions to meet technical and project requirements.
  • Maintain high technical standards, consistent with the project brief.
  • Process projects through preliminary and detailed design with particular emphasis on client requirements and innovation.
  • Liaise with clients and ensure their requirements are effectively communicated to the team.
  • Prepare and check engineering designs, calculations, and oversee drawing production.
  • Prepare and check contract documents and scheme cost estimates.
  • Prepare and check technical documents and reports and assist in the preparation of expressions of interest and tenders
  • Ensure compliance with relevant health, safety and environmental legislation, particularly the CDM regulations.
  • Supervise team members including all engineers, senior technicians and assistant and graduate engineers.
  • Respond to queries from and liaise with the developers and their consultants, Officers of the Company, county, District, Parish councillors, members of the public and other stakeholder groups.
  • Maintain a strong focused client relationship.
  • Assist with contract preparation together with project planning and programming.
  • Project administration reporting to the Project Manager including monitoring programme delivery, resources and budgets.
  • Inspection work, feasibility studies, cost estimating works and fees
  • Effective management and response of project related correspondence.
  • Undertake site supervision duties of contractors when required.
  • Checks to ensure compliance with the integrated management system and assist in its development.
  • Support Consulting in the preparation of bids and delivery of services on other contracts
  • Complete performance appraisals and provide development opportunities., Develop effective concept design solutions that are consistent with the project brief.

    Acting as a lead engineer on projects. Able to take on significant elements of the design, working on their own initiative, with minimal supervision.
  • Working within a team to obtain and analyse information, and report on findings.
  • Production of engineering drawings and reports. Site surveys. Use of engineering related packages such as AutoCAD, Xylect, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access)
  • Skills
  • Ability to produce mechanical design drawings using AutoCAD 2D.
  • Familiar with the use of Pump Calculation software for pump selection.
  • A good working knowledge of sewage and clean water processes.
  • Knowledge of wet well pumping stations, screening packages, compactors, etc
  • The ability to undertake site surveys and develop good practical engineering solutions.
  • The ability to think outside of what has been considered to give Avove the edge in providing solutions.
  • A basic knowledge of civil works would be beneficial (plinths, trenches, duct chambers)
  • Production of Design Hazard Risk Assessments and Pre-construction Information (part of the Health and Safety), using Microsoft word and excel.
  • Be able to estimate working hours required at the beginning of a job to build a cost plan.
  • To be able to run with numerous projects simultaneously.
  • A team player and communicator who can take a design from start to finish including site support to our project managers and construction team whilst working on his or her own initiative.
  • Willing to travel with occasional overnight stays.
  • Must have a driving license.
