Full Job Description
The British Museum is excited to announce recruitment for a Finds Adviser for Iron Age and Roman Coins. The postholder will work as part of the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) - a project to record archaeological finds made by the public to advance knowledge - but will be based in the British Museum's department of Money & Medals. The PAS has recorded over 1.8 million finds, many of which are Iron Age and Roman coins (see finds.org.uk). The main roles of the postholder will be to provide training for the Scheme's network of locally based Finds Liaison Officers (FLOs) and others on identifying and recording Iron Age and Roman coins, to help FLOs and other PAS staff in that work, ensure the robustness of the data recorded on the PAS database, and contribute to academic and popular publications to highlight the value of PAS data. This data is transforming our knowledge of Iron Age and Roman Britain and we are keen that this postholder helps drive that work going forward. Applicants should have an excellent knowledge of Iron Age and (particularly) Roman coins and have a publication record to suit. Key areas of responsibility:
- Develop and deliver training for Finds Liaison Officers (FLOs)
- Provide advice on identifying and recording Iron Age and Roman coins to FLOs and others
- Ensure records added to the PAS database are accurate and consistent, feeding modifications back to recorders
- Assist with developing resources for the PAS website/database
- Contribute to popular and academic publications on Iron Age and Roman coins
