Full Job Description
· To provide assessment, training, support and guidance to families at point of diagnosis and following acute episodes.
· To work with Lead Consultant, Matrons, Management and commissioners to develop services for Children and Young People with Allergy, Asthma, CF and other respiratory conditions.
· To lead on discharge planning process for children with complex conditions, supporting the ward team with the liaison process between Community and commissioning services.
·
· To develop and deliver Nurse Led Clinics for children and young people with Allergy and Respiratory conditions in collaboration with the Lead Consultant.
· To constantly evaluate the views of the young people and their carers' in order to oversee improvements and make changes to service delivery.
· To educate and train professionals on the Bedford Site about the care and needs of young people with relevant long term conditions and in doing so improve the experiences of all young people in the Trust.
· To work confidently in an acute paediatric setting, contributing to the Senior Nursing rota, giving clear leadership and clinical guidance.

Please review all documents attached to ensure you familiarize yourself with all requirements of the job., This is an exciting opportunity to expand and develop the role of a combined paediatric respiratory, allergy and Haematology specialist nurse.
Respiratory and Allergy service
· To take an active role in the service and to take the lead on respiratory and allergy service initiatives
· To manage a complex and diverse caseload of paediatric respiratory patients and facilitate the allergy testing service. Respiratory patients are predominately those with complex Asthma or Cystic Fibrosis (including oxygen dependent children and other respiratory conditions, i.e. PCD) performing assessments, and planning treatments.
· To support with Spirometry and FeNO services in collaboration with the Community Respiratory physiotherapists.
· To deliver Epipen (or equivalent) training to inpatients prior to discharge, and ensure ward staff are educated in the discharge process for patient who are discharged following an allergic reaction.
· To continually review and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment plans.
· To be an advocate for the children and families that are under your care.
· To monitor and improve standards of care through supervision of practice, clinical audit, evidence based practice, teaching and supporting colleagues and skilled professional leadership. Including strengthening clinical links with other medical and paramedical staff i.e. GP's and Health visitors.
· To provide nurse led respiratory clinics in the outpatient department.
· To facilitate the seasonal RSV prevention clinics assisting with patient selection, requesting, prescribing and administration of medication.
· To work as part of the multidisciplinary team, and liaise with the specialist regional services.
· To undertake lone working as required.
· To develop the clinical roles of staff within the children's out -patient area to be able to deliver skin prick testing and food challenges, ensuring they provide high quality care and promote good standards of practice.
The post holder will work with the Ward Manager and Senior Sisters to:
· Ensure that your own and others clinical practice is patient centred and evidence based in accordance with the NMC code of practice and other relevant professional codes and standards
· Act as a role model of standards of behaviour and professionalism
Comply with infection control policies
· Monitor and maintain high standards of documentation and record keeping
· Lead the development of clinical services in the specialist field
· Be responsible for a caseload of patients
· Establish a rapport with the patient and Involve the child and family in the planning, delivery of care and the development of services
· Work in collaboration with other professionals and agencies to provide an holistic approach to family centred care
· Promote and implement the philosophy that all children have a right to be protected from harm.
· Undertake audits of practice
· Provide practice supervision for preregistration students
· Share knowledge and skills with members of the multidisciplinary team, using a variety of different teaching methods and presentation skills
maintain professional registration and practice through revalidation
· Be aware of and comply with all the Trusts policies and mandatory training
· To provide resilience to the acute ward areas at times of demand by maintaining appropriate clinical skills to enable work in the acute areas when required
Clinical and Professional Leadership
· To undertake the Key Worker role for specified patients ensuring their care is co-ordinated and communicated to relevant parties.
· To undertake holistic assessment and monitor progress and condition of children in collaboration with Community colleagues when under treatment for respiratory conditions.
· To provide continuity of care between the specialist centres and the patient, reporting to and attending joint MDT meetings.
· In accordance with the specialist centres policies and guidelines, to deliver various respiratory interventions. This may include, supportive treatments and care of central venous devices.
· To expedite appointments and arrange admissions where a child's condition is such to warrant this action.
· To deliver high quality direct care where indicated.
· To work in close partnership with children and their families in developing care plans, thus encouraging their independence and self-reliance.
· To recognise situations where a child's welfare may be compromised whether from conditions at home or through child protection issues, and initiate Child Safeguarding Procedures in consultation with the multi-disciplinary team.
· To take opportunities for health promotion of children and families, using appropriate health promotion strategies.
· To ensure that all activity with families is contemporaneously and accurately documented in the appropriate place in order to maximise team working and communication.
· To provide supervision, mentorship and support to nursing staff working within the ward and POPD.
Managerial
· Promote and maintain good working relationships, promoting good communications and acting as an excellent role model.
· Undertake Performance Review and identify and address any training needs.
· Ensure good communication between the wards and the multidisciplinary services to enable them to carry out their part in the care of the child and family.
· Ensure that sufficient supplies are available to meet the needs of children and their families.
· Participate in setting and monitoring clinical and service standards in line with specialist and national guidelines.
· Contribute to the Peer Review process
· To plan the duty rota for POPD maintaining a flexible approach to ensure cover.
· Ensure effective departmental budgeting and be economic in the use of stocks and clinical requisitions, avoiding waste wherever possible.
· To lead on recruitment of nursing/allied staff for the POPD area.
· Teaching and learning
· Co-ordinate, in liaison with the named student facilitator, the supervision and assessment of learners and the development of teaching programmes to meet the NMC requirements and to ensure that appropriate clinical experience and teaching is available.
· Act as mentor to students.
· Ensure that the training needs of all staff in relation to care of children and young people with respiratory conditions are met.
· To be aware of current trends in paediatric nursing and take responsibility for own professional updating.
· Communication
· Participate in the required number of ward meetings, team meetings and hospital - wide activities as requested by the Matron
· Ensure that excellent communication is maintained both verbal and written and is presented in an accessible format.
· Assist in the development and maintenance of effective strategies for communication to all members of staff in the ward.
· Clinical Governance
· Participate in Clinical Governance and promote Clinical Risk Management within the Division/CBU
· Lead the audit process to monitor the effectiveness of the team's nursing interventions as required.
· Assist the Paediatric Matron, to continue to develop and set standards of care, taking into account relevant published and local research.
