Full Job Description

As the UKAEA moves from its current state through to the future, it is a priority to expand our activities into areas - both technical and commercial - where we can supply expertise and skills, whilst maintaining our world-class status as a science, engineering and technology R&D organisation and centre of excellence for fusion and the wider research community. This requires the organisation to retain its present skill base as well as build up skills in key growth areas including exploiting the synergies between fusion and fission. The role of Early Careers in achieving these goals is instrumental as its main responsibilities include managing the talent pipeline for futureproofing of the UKAEA including engaging, attracting, recruiting and retaining the next generation of talent. In addition, Early Careers advisors help bridge the cultural gap between student and professional life. Who are we looking for? Early Careers Advisor is responsible for supporting the graduate programme and the schemes that are part of the talent pipeline into the graduate programme. The role offers a lot of variety in many aspects of talent management. There will be opportunities for somebody to develop coaching skills and also offer well-being support to graduates. The key behaviours and competencies required for this role are strong organisation and time management skills, patience and good listening skills. The ability to raise concerns with managers and other stakeholders. A flexible approach is crucial in being successful in this role. What will you be responsible for?

  • Work with departments and programmes to identify their early careers needs, focusing on business and delivery plans and identifying the right mix of apprentices and graduates from the right subject areas to meet those needs.
  • Supporting the graduate leadership, to play a key role in the development of the graduate programme, increasing numbers and diversity.
  • Support the delivery of the programmes, ensuring graduates access the right learning, development and training opportunities, and supporting placements ensuring they are organised including the provision of the right level of supervision and support.
  • Support the training of early careers line manager and supervisors, including but not limited to the right level of knowledge around safeguarding, graduate programmes and the skills required in supporting individuals on early careers programmes.
  • Contribute to the operation of the Early Career's programmes, including working with identified programmes and departments in identifying their early careers needs and outreach activities. Leading on specific projects within the graduate programme as directed by the scheme lead.
  • To provide mentoring and personal support to individuals on the graduate programmes to support them in completing the programmes they are a part of.
