Full Job Description
If you are passionate about patient care and would like to work in a busy environment, then the role of Phlebotomy Supervisor may be for you. Our team of Phlebotomists take blood samples from inpatients at West Suffolk Hospital (WSH) and from outpatients at WSH, Newmarket Community Hospital, Mildenhall Health Centre and Sudbury Community Health Centre. The inpatient service is provided over a seven-day week, whilst for outpatients the service is weekdays plus Saturday mornings at WSH. This is an exciting time with the opening of the Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) at Newmarket Hospital set for later this year. The phlebotomy team are now recruiting to support the new service at the CDC which will be running seven days a week with the aim of bringing diagnostic testing closer to patients. The successful candidates will need to have good problem-solving skills and be able to work under pressure. They will be required to supervise the day to day running of a team ensuring that staff are allocated to support the service in a timely manner. Additional tasks may need to be performed such as assisting the phlebotomy management team with recruitment and rosters, and in overall service delivery. Good communication skills with the ability to communicate at all levels are essential to this role as is a comprehensive working knowledge of all phlebotomy procedures. - To be part of the team responsible for the collection of blood samples by venepuncture or finger prick, from patients served by West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust.
- To represent the West Suffolk Hospital Pathology Department and assist the department in achieving its quality objectives including feeding back on the needs of users.
- Communication with all patients of varying needs.
- Accurate identification of patient and labelling of samples.
- Requirement to perform phlebotomy duties at various locations to support the development of the phlebotomy service.
- Maintains records in relation to activities carried out.
- To cover the duties of other Phlebotomists on all sites, when on leave, or in the event of illness.
- To deputise for the Phlebotomy Manager.
- To work flexibly in respect of service needs which may include an extended working day and participation in the delivery of a 7 days per week service.
- The work of the service brings staff into contact with human body fluids, tissues and hazardous chemicals. This may include blood, pus, urine, faeces, and respiratory secretions.

- oThe ability to mentor new and less experienced staff on a regular basis.
- oAble to provide patients with an environment that supports privacy and dignity.
