Full Job Description
To provide an efficient portering service within Norfolk and Norwich Hospital with focus on patient care escorting to and from departments and wards. The safe delivery and movement of items such as records, mail, furniture, linen, medical gasses, and other duties including but not limited to equipment management and mortuary transfers. The Porter will be required to self-manage their work and activities with consideration to patient care and other service requirements. The department is responsible for portering and logistics for the entire site and provides a 24hour, 7 day, and 365 days per week service and can experience high volume of work on an ongoing basis. Duties are expected to be completed either as an emergency, planned or routine task.,
- Have direct patient contact daily. Escort patients from wards or departments by wheelchair, bed, or trolley, when necessary, within time periods specified in priority listing.
- Assist Nursing staff to transfer deceased patients into the Mortuary trolley and transfer them to the Mortuary in a respectful and safe manner, ensuring that all movements within the mortuary are recorded and that procedures have been followed.
- Movement of patient equipment, pharmacy stores, medical gases, medical records, and furniture as directed and authorised by the Trust via the Serco Service Desk
- Collect and deliver medical records to relevant department in compliance with data protection guidelines.
- Assist in the collection and management of wheelchairs within the hospital to ensure the even allocation of wheelchairs to designated collection points.
- Take delivery of external post, and then sort, deliver and collect internal post ensuring external delivery timeframes are adhered to.
- Undertake cleaning of wheelchairs after patient use.
- Transport medical gases and ensure safe working practices with medical gas exchange system and safe connection to regulators.
- Project a professional, courteous, and helpful image at all times.
- Comply with the guidelines on confidentiality and data protection.
- Maintain verbal and written communication systems within the department, wards, colleagues, patients, staff, and visitors to ensure a comfortable and safe patient experience.
- Actively access and undertake daily work activities via the electronic systems and radio systems, PDA's and respond to changing demands as required.
- Carry out first line response, including interacting, resetting, and reporting any issues.
- Ensure that high personal hygiene and infection control standards are maintained in relation to personal tasks.
- Ensure that all work is carried out in line with Health and Safety, Quality and Serco and Trust policies and procedures.
- To undertake visual inspection of equipment, prior to use, in line with H&S and training and take out of service and report to supervisor if any equipment is faulty, completing appropriate paperwork.
- Increased focus on using judgement and empathy to ensure appropriate caring and supportive communication to enhance patient experience.
- Perform tasks always wearing the correct uniform and protective clothing.
- To participate in team briefs, toolbox talks and all training, to ensure your knowledge and skills are up to date.
- Undertake other ad hoc duties as prescribed by manager and within scope of skill and capability.
