Full Job Description

Based at the National Horizons Centre in Darlington, the School of Health and Life Sciences is seeking to appoint a Post-doctoral Research Associate (Grade 7) to a post for 12 months. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with world leading expertise in developing later flow assays and diagnostics to join the new £22.3 million National Horizons Centre (NHC). The centre is located at 5 minutes walk from the train station which is on the main train line and is very accessible from cities of Newcastle and York for daily commute.

At the National Horizons Centre (NHC), high-quality research activity is undertaken with a strong industry focus, linking advanced biosciences to an understanding of whole bioprocesses by which discoveries are translated into healthcare outcomes. The NHC has superb facilities for biomanufacturing research with potential for significant impact on the bioprocessing and biomanufacturing of cell and gene therapies, biologics, vaccines, oligonucleotides, regenerative medicines, pharmaceuticals and cultivated foods.

The Centre's research portfolio spans synthetic biology, industrial biotechnology, macromolecular therapies, regenerative medicines and cell therapy bioprocessing, artificial intelligence and modelling for bioprocess control and decision making, process engineering, diagnostics development and creating virtual reality tools.

To create the most impact possible, and achieve the desired outcomes for society, we collaborate with the best scientists and clinicians in the bioscience and healthcare sector. This is reinforced through our strategic partnerships.

Our Northern Bio-Accelerator Partnership (NBioP) with CPI and FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies, creates a bioprocessing, biomanufacturing and biopharmaceutical hub making the North-East a centre of innovation, with expertise in the full life cycle of biopharmaceuticals, from basic and applied bioprocessing research, through to biopharmaceutical scale up and ultimately, the commercial manufacture of life changing medicines. More information here.

Our partnership with the NHS, via the Durham Tees Valley Research Alliance (DTVRA), looks to explore new ways in which the two organisations can harness their world-leading research expertise to deliver real impact in healthcare, through clinical and biomedical research, joint grant applications, supporting research fellowships, co-supervising PhD studentships, and access to the NHC's training courses for healthcare professionals. More information here.

We have been a UK National Training Centre for Advanced Therapies, providing essential hands-on training courses in advanced therapies, vaccine manufacturing and bioprocessing. More information here.

Now we are proud to be a part of RESILIENCE, which is a collaboration between Universities of Birmingham, Heriot-Watt University, University College London, Teesside University and Britest. More information here As part of this, we have a virtual reality training suite and are developing significant capabilities in using virtual reality for biomanufacturing training.

We are now seeking a new member of staff to strengthen our diagnostics capability on a newly funded project funded through Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA). The hired person will get to work on developing point of use diagnostic devices alongside biochemists and engineers from Smiths Detection and Selective Antibodies particularly with Prof. Colin Self (CEO Selective Antibodies).
