Full Job Description

The Science Assistant works under the instruction and guidance of the Head of Science. They are responsible for managing and maintaining science supplies and preparing equipment and resources for lessons. The Science Assistant also provides technical support to the teacher during lessons.   • Foster the development and continuation of good parent relationships.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with the Head of Science.
  • Teaching and Learning
  • Under the direction of the Head of Science, prepare and set up equipment and materials for science lessons and experiments, ensuring that they are safe, in good working order and fit for purpose [this includes resetting equipment between lessons].
  • Provide technical support and assistance to the teacher during lessons.
  • Maintain the school's science lab and stock area, ensuring that they are clean, tidy, and well-organised.
  • Order and manage science supplies and equipment, ensuring they are used efficiently and effectively.
  • Ensure current health and safety standards are met and sustained within the science laboratory.
  • Maintain accurate records of equipment and materials, ensuring that they are properly stored and disposed of when necessary.
  • Safeguarding & Pastoral Care
  • Take responsibility for, and promote, the safety, welfare and wellbeing of all pupils in your care.
  • Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.
  • Provide a warm, supportive atmosphere, conducive to the social and emotional needs of the pupils.
  • Follow all codes of practice in relation to school discipline, health and safety regulations and the reporting of accidents.
  • Manage pupils' behaviour in line with school policy.
  • Value the contributions of all pupils and treat everyone with fairness and respect.

  • A Levels or equivalent
  • A good level of numeracy and literacy skills (GCSE or equivalent)

  • Experience of teaching or supporting the teaching of science within the primary age range
  • Skills Essential:
  • Able to communicate positively to children in an age appropriate way

  • Able to impart enthusiasm for science to young children
  • Knowledge Essential:
  • An understanding of scientific equipment and its maintenance
  • Desirable:
  • Knowledge of the Primary Science National Curriculum
