Full Job Description

As a Senior Business Development Executive in the Employment team, your primary focus will be working with the lawyers within the Department, related sector groups and Group companies. You will work closely with the Head of Business Development and take responsibility for delivering BD and marketing activities, initiate ideas, help set the agenda for the various internal groups and take the lead on pushing projects through to successful completion. You will engage regularly with the central teams and other practice areas to enhance collaboration across the firm and spot opportunities for the Employment department., As Senior Executive, you will have day to day contact with a variety of key stakeholders and you will need to win their trust in order to make credible BD proposals. You will work with resources in the team effectively to maintain focus on the areas that will create the most impact. The main areas of focus for this role will be to:

  • To develop a deep understanding of the practice areas, their specialisms, clients, market positioning and how they interact with each other and also practices across the firm.
  • To have a deep understanding of the wider firm - connections, crossovers, intricacies.
  • Work closely with the rest of the team in the execution of the BD programme for these groups, including the communication of specific messages and the creation and implementation of products and value add-on services to clients, intermediaries and other members of the firm. Be able to suggest improvements through the process.
  • Lead the preparation of directory and award submissions for the departments with the appropriate lawyers. Take responsibility for delivering great content on time.
  • Work with the lawyers in the production of credential statements, pitch documents and PowerPoint presentations, marketing material (including brochures, newsletters and client briefings) and other client communications.
  • Support the lawyers in implementing business development activities including: planning, organisation and project management of a wide range of client-focussed events in London, Cambridge and Oxford, and effective follow-up activity. To include liaising with other service functions to arrange any support for internal events.
  • Assist in research to identify key targets both in the UK and Internationally.
  • Assist in coordinating attendance and support material for externally organised conferences and exhibitions.
  • Work with the Digital Marketing Team in the production of regular direct mail and e-mailings, utilising the Firm's InterAction CRM system. Working with the PAs to keep the InterAction database up-to-date and ensuring that all departments are given an opportunity to involve their clients in any activity (and that this is reflected in any database lists).
  • Contribute to the maintenance of the internet and intranet to ensure business development content is appropriate and up to date.
  • Prepare documentation for business development meetings including agendas, emails, business development schedules and other documents.

  • Work collaboratively with all members of the BD team. Bring a "can do" and positive attitude to the role.
  • Demonstrate an agile approach to work, flexing your style to be able to provide support on a range of activities to other departments and members of the BD team as and when needed.
  • Act as a role model to more junior members of the wider team.
  • Enhance the reputation of the BD team within the firm for its professionalism and for the strategic and distinctive value it provides.

  • Work with communications and information services resources within the firm as well as external suppliers.
  • Make effective use of all communication channels for the firm generally e.g. website, e-bulletins, media, sponsorship, conferences, research and industry networks.
  • Identify which are the most appropriate clients and intermediaries for growth (current and past clients as well as future targets), and develop plans accordingly.
  • Identify and develop Practice specific products and services that can be used to position the Practices competitively.
  • Work closely with the Knowledge Lawyers (KLs), so as to ensure that all members of the department (and business development) are aware of key issues and trends in the law.
  • Improve the marketing capability of the Practice's lawyers and raise their awareness of the role that the business development team can play. Develop/progress client action plans.
  • Further develop the Firm's profile through: PR, editorial, thought leadership market research, select conferences, newsletters and seminars. This will involve working with our Central BD team and external PR Agencies.
  • Deliver plans within budget and to agreed timings.
  • Support in the preparation of directory submissions.
  • Work with our Business Insights team to develop metrics that measure the effectiveness of all activities.

  • Very good written skills, able to produce good quality first drafts.
  • Client development focus in previous roles as well as experience in pitch/proposal preparation.
  • Strong project management skills - the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, with energy, enthusiasm and drive.
  • Experience of working with CRM systems; and an aptitude for using broad IT applications.
  • A team-orientated approach, with the ability to demonstrate through past experience that they have a strong commercial and client-led approach to their work.
  • A swift, analytical approach to problems.
