Full Job Description

The Senior Legal Counsel role is a senior member of the Legal Services department and will play an important role in ensuring an effective and highly respected service. The Senior Legal Counsel will be responsible for providing legal advice in areas that are relevant to the activities of UCL and the legal subject matter focus of the role, which fall broadly into the following portfolios:

  • Commercial and university related work
  • Property related issues and transactions
  • Contentious and non-contentious matters
  • The role will involve working collaboratively with external lawyers to ensure they deliver tailored, cost effective advice to protect and further the interests of UCL. Where required, the Senior Legal Counsel will represent Legal Services at Committees, sub-committees, working groups and the like through appropriate and active engagement, and deputise for the Deputy Director or Director of Legal Services. The Senior Legal Counsel will also adhere to and promoting the One Legal Family concept. Please note we have five of these positions currently available.   • Be a Qualified solicitor or barrister with relevant post-qualification experience.
  • Have strong knowledge of legal issues in areas aligned to the subject matter focus of the role.
  • Have experience of briefing and influencing at management level.
  • Have experience of involvement in legal project management in relation to significant organisational cross-disciplinary projects involving legal and non-legal stakeholders.
  • Have experience of positively contributing to building stakeholder relationships.

    The Office of General Counsel is led by the General Counsel, who reports to the President and Provost. It comprises the following teams: Legal Services, Data Protection and Freedom of Information, Governance, Policy, and Risk and Compliance.
  • UCL's Legal Services Department, which is led by the Director of Legal Services, is responsible for providing advice on a wide range of legal matters relating to UCL.
