Full Job Description
The Designer will develop and deliver content, ensuring that it achieves the highest creative and editorial standards with adherence to BBC guidelines. Working in collaboration with marketing or editorial colleagues across platforms and languages, Are you a passionate leader who has successfully led large creative teams? Are looking for a fresh challenge and the chance to oversee design of one of the UK's most popular TV programmes?, The Design team supporting one of the UK's most loved soaps, EastEnders, is looking for a Series Designer to join their team on a continuing basis. As much managerial as creative, this exciting opportunity would suit an experienced Series Designer or Production Designer who enjoys EastEnders and has a good knowledge and appreciation of the show and it's style. Overseeing a team that spans construction, props and design, the Series Designer is responsible for overall design including budget, and line management of various staff, freelancers and HODs. A passionate leader you will be able to clearly communicate your vision and aspirations to the wider team, and confidently deliver positive and constructive feedback. You will be responsible for recruitment and headcount, and continue to build and schedule a pool of freelance talent. You will have creative and budgetary oversight of all design work and lead on more complex or series-wide designs. You will be the custodian of tone and style and ensure design is consistent and appropriate. You will have expert knowledge of clearance legislation and ensure the team are compliant. The successful candidate will have significant drama experience at a similar level, ideally working in a multi-camera environment, with experience of managing a large team. Main Responsibilities:
- Overall responsibility for the maintenance and improvement of existing sets in continuing series and backlot areas within the studios.
- Responsibility for the recruitment of all design personnel, scheduling of the teams and ensure appropriate scheduling of working time leave.
- Manage training within the department such as mandatory training, manual handling, Safe Construction and design, food hygiene and other health and safety courses.
- Work with Producers to create an overview of the design of the programmes.
- Set and execute a fiscal plan, considering headcount and workforce planning to achieve programme goals, editorial and creative vision within assigned budget.
- Manage the overall design budget and keep the Line Producer and Production Accountant abreast of costs with regular budget updates.
- Manage, lead and develop a large, diverse high performing Design Team and Department.
- Be responsible for creating a positive working environment for colleagues from a diversity of backgrounds and experiences.
- Oversee the design, cost and build of new sets.
- Liaise with forward planning schedulers and Production Managers to plan any specific requirements to facilitate efficient scheduling or any particular needs and requirements for the team.
- Liaising with external companies as required in line with BBC Policies.
- Other duties as reasonably required by your line manager(s).
Experience as a drama Series Designer or Production Designer - A wide-ranging knowledge of television production processes with a demonstratable and thorough understanding of continuing drama and the jobs of the programme and resource personnel engaged to complete the production
- Experience and evidence of leading large, creative teams; nurturing and inspiring a range of disciplines and skill levels
- Evidence of utilising highly effective communication skills. Ability to clearly communicate with colleagues and foster positive working relationships with a wide range of internal and external, production and non-production personnel
- Experience and evidence of communicating vision and goals which inspire and generate innovative ideas. Ability to translate ideas into practical realities within varying and often tight time frames and budgets.
- Experience of working in a multi-camera drama environment
- Effective negotiating and management skills
- Understanding of the importance of the BBC's values in accuracy and impartiality
- Knowledge and passion for Continuing Dramas, especially EastEnders
- Thorough knowledge of health and safety protocols and qualified in risk assessment.
