Full Job Description

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our engineering teams within Commercial Data Products., The Software Engineering Manager is a pivotal role, responsible for the leadership, technical vision and output of the Commercial Data Products (CDP) engineering teams. Closely collaborating with the department director and senior leaders, as well as directly line managing the team leads and principal engineers, this position is essential in delivering the technology that powers the data platforms and data products that underpin BBC Studios. The role encompasses the entire spectrum of software and data product development lifecycles to seamlessly blend technical goals with business objectives. Central to this position is the drive to foster a culture of engineering excellence powering the growth and success of BBC Studios. The CDP engineering teams are responsible for building and maintaining the cloud infrastructure of the data platform (integrating SaaS products and building new platform features), as well as leading the data engineering function.

  • Leadership and Management - Recruit, mentor, coach and manage engineering staff, ensuring the quality of their work and professional development. Providing technical leadership and direction to colleagues.
  • Technical Strategy - Provide technical direction and oversight, setting a clear technical vision and strategy that contributes to the overall goals of the Commercial Data Products team.
  • Operational Excellence - Drive operational excellence, streamlining processes and systems and aligning with architectural strategy to enhance efficiency, meet deadlines, and successfully implement initiatives. Providing guidance and making strategic choices on complex projects and product initiatives, aligning with our strategy to be sustainable, scalable & innovative.
  • Collaboration - Work closely with multidiscipline leads and teams and more widely across the business to ensure the timely delivery of high-quality solutions, ensuring alignment with wider vision and objectives and to play a part in placing Studios as thought leaders in the data platform industry.
  • Culture - Cultivate a positive, dynamic, and productive work environment, promoting a culture of continuous improvement and high performance.

  • Proven experience in collaborating with other disciplines to deliver quality outputs together.
  • Working collaboratively with your reports, peers and stakeholders to deliver successful technical solutions to ambitious timescales.
  • Operational experience running data platforms or equivalent, and delivering high-performing, reliable and scalable products and services.
  • Experience of database design, performance optimisation and awareness of cloud-based Big Data "data warehouse" systems such as Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery or Athena.
  • Experience in or exposure to Infrastructure-as-Code including Cloudformation and Terraform, plus modern typed languages such as Typescript, C#, Java, etc, and SQL.
  • Understanding of the principles of data mesh and benefits of democracy of data.
  • Strong understanding of data governance, privacy and compliance.
  • Technical design and service architecture experience, specialising in addressing the challenges of working with data at scale and in building highly scalable data pipeline.
  • Continuously driving engineering improvements - tools, practices and processes.

The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights. Contract type: Permanent role. Location: Office Base is Television Centre, London W12 (This is a hybrid role and the successful candidate will balance office working with home working).
