Full Job Description

As a colorectal clinical nurse specialist, you will liaise and co-ordinate the care for patients with surgical colorectal conditions from birth through to transition. You will be expected to work alongside the consultants and wider multi-professional team through the attendance at MDT meetings and through co-ordinating and attending speciality clinics. You will be an advocate for the patient and their family, discussing treatment and on-going care plans with them and supporting them to understand the treatment pathway. You will be required to lead and develop this service, network with other centres and benchmark to ensure high-quality, evidence-based care is provided. You will be expected to work without supervision. The role includes working collaboratively with other specialties, in addition to supporting District General Hospitals with expert advice.

  • Act as the clinical expert and professional resource to the patients and carers and multi-professional team, within their specialist service.
  • Work alongside other specialist nurses / Head of Nursing to ensure the development and delivery of a high-quality service. · Directly or indirectly influence all aspects of care and management of patients within the service/specialty.
  • Deliver high quality, clinically effective care, and patient experience, utilizing research an in collaboration with colleagues in everyday practice.
  • Act as a role model and clinical resource demonstrating high standards of care and providing clinical leadership in the specialist area.
  • Support the surgical colorectal service with development and delivery of a programme of practice and professional development for staff within the speciality.
  • A minimum of 50% of time must be spent in clinical practice.

  • Manage a delegated caseload of patients, as appropriate within the speciality, delivering individualised and personalised direct patient care.
  • Provide clinical expertise, specialist advice and support across the whole spectrum of the Colorectal service.
  • Lead and develop the Colorectal service, demonstrating in depth specialist knowledge, skills and innovative practice , ensuring the delivery of appropriate evidence based care.
  • Support, assist and encourage the multi-disciplinary team in resolving complex patient problems, be innovative and creative to develop the service to work for all specialities. Promote the philosophy of patient-centred care and establish and maintain a supportive relationship with the patient and their family at all times.
  • To assess, diagnose and treat within scope of practice, advise medical and nursing staff and/or prescribe and review medication.
