The role: Are you passionate about empowering students and helping them navigate challenges during their studies? We're looking for an empathetic and organised Student Adviser (Academic) to provide specialist impartial information, advice, representation and casework support. You will help students understand their rights, make informed decisions, and access the support they need. You will report to the Advice Manager and work under the direction of the Head of Advocacy and Wellbeing. We are committed to your professional growth and will support you with development opportunities. Key responsibilities: As the Student Adviser (Academic) you will:
- Provide impartial and specialist academic advice.
- Ensure clients have the appropriate advice & accurate information to make informed choices and access support.
- Undertake detailed casework, including negotiation, advocacy and representation, for clients to assist Newcastle University students in overcoming problems & issues.
- Deliver training and attend relevant training to stay up to date with students' rights and University policies.
- Maintain confidential and accurate case records in line with Data Protection/GDPR and service standards.
- Promote the Support & Advice Hub and liaise with the University and other agencies.
- Identify and escalate safeguarding concerns where necessary.
- Champion NUSU's Equality & Diversity Policy in all aspects of the role.
Educated to degree level or experience in the relevant field - Professional qualification or substantial experience in a specialist field of advice
- Detailed knowledge of student issues, rights and entitlements in one of more advice areas
- Detailed knowledge of the support services available to students within higher education and externally. Skills & Experience:
- Excellent communication organisation and mediation skills
- Ability to manage assess and prioritise casework
- Experience in an advice and advocacy environment
- Experience of undertaking casework to a representation level.
