Full Job Description

The role reports to the Director of Tax, who is based in our London offices. The purpose of the role is to lead and manage all aspects of the direct tax compliance cycle for the News Corp UK & Irish companies. Working closely with other members of the UK and US based Tax team to provide integrated tax support to the business and the wider News Corp team. The role manages the UK Corporate Tax Analyst role. Day to day you will: Direct Tax Responsibilities:

  • Lead/manage/prepare work as part of the UK corporate tax compliance cycle. Including, but not limited to, preparation/ management of 40+ UK Corporation Tax Returns for the News Corp UK group companies; all relevant corporate tax group schedules, for example group relief and group interest calculations and schedules, UK corporate cash tax forecasting; and assist resolution of significant HMRC enquiries working with the wider UK Tax team and external advisors to manage the HMRC relationship and resolution of open enquiries
  • Manage the preparation of 10+ Irish corporate tax returns, working closely with local advisors, ensuring timely completion and accurate submission of returns
  • Lead preparation of tax disclosures for all UK & Irish financial statements (including consolidated tax numbers, where required). Liaise with external auditors as required. Oversee relevant Irish GAAP accounting entries, working with local finance teams
  • Prepare US GAAP quarterly tax outlook/reporting, annual reporting, and tax figures for inclusion in budget/long-term forecasts. Liaise with external auditors as required. Pro-actively liaise with the US tax team to identify and explain the impact of tax issues (e.g. CIR, interest deductibility)
  • Work with the Tax Business Partner roles to deliver/ manage consistent and accurate tax advice across all business units and initiatives; for example, maximising R&D credits, support on M&A/ transactional work. Able to consult, collaborate and communicate with other parts of the UK Tax team and the wider stakeholder community to effectively and efficiently reach solutions/ share information
  • Develop and maintain relationship within the wider finance, treasury, legal and other business function teams, across London and Peterborough sites
  • Manage relevant external advisor relationships
  • Lead and work on direct tax projects, such as R&D claims and Capital Allowances projects, to ensure maximum relief and that timescales are adhered to, to meet filing obligations
  • Governance and Risk Management:
  • Manage the compliance and reporting processes and controls, with a view to continuous improvement. Lead annual SAO compliance projects, working with relevant tax business partners and the wider Tax/ support teams to ensure relevant documentation in place and testing occurs
  • Provide assistance and support with Sarbanes-Oxley compliance, producing a quarterly file, with all relevant support for review and completion of testing, as instructed by the SOX department
  • Evaluate UK tax legislation changes and work with relevant tax business partners to assess and communicate the associated impact on business units
  • Complete annual Form 42 returns, linking up with the US tax team and UK reporting teams, to ensure consistent reporting of numbers across the group
  • Oversee development of the Tax Analyst, including training and delegation of tasks to further their exposure to all areas of Corporation Tax, reviews of their work and providing effective feedback. Offer wider support to the Tax team
  • Bridge the London based and Peterborough based tax teams, to ensure effective working relationships
  • Be part of the Senior Leadership Team in Peterborough, ensuring attendance at regular meetings and effective communication with both the Peterborough and London tax teams of changes and activities across the wider business

  • Able to work under pressure to deliver work in a timely and organised manner, ensuring both internal and external submissions are completed to stringent deadlines, giving time for senior reviews/circulation where applicable
  • Excellent communication skills, able to converse with people at all levels and to present information clearly and concisely.
  • Well-developed relationship building skills, both with colleagues and the broader News Corp teams. Able to foster a collaborative, team environment within the News Corp UK Tax team and to develop junior team members. Proven willingness to share information and access thereto.
  • The ability to identify, share and implement opportunities for different and innovative approaches, challenges and solutions.
  • Develops vision for area of responsibility and sets goals accordingly
  • To actively seek input from internal and/or external stakeholders to better understand their needs., Recognised accounting and/or tax qualification. Adequatelevel of post-qualified, relevant tax experience is required: strong tax compliance, technical and accounting background.
  • Proven organisation skills, able to plan work streams to fit the compliance timetable.
  • High level of IT literacy - Microsoft office packages; SAP/ ERP systems and tax compliance software useful.
