Full Job Description
Acute Medicine at the Royal United Hospital centres around a 13 bedded direct GP assessment area (DAA) and a 25-bedded Medical Assessment Unit (MAU), located next to and operating closely with the Emergency Department. In addition to the MAU and DAA, the acute medicine team are also responsible for patients in the 18-bedded Medical Short Stay ward (MSS), and a busy ambulatory care/SDEC area. There is day-to-day supervision by the Consultants in Acute Medicine. 15 SHOs/F2s and 1 F1 are assigned to the acute medicine team at any one time; this team manages the acute take from Monday to Friday and also provides ward cover for all medical patients in the hospital overnight with assistance from the ward based medical teams.
Emergency admissions between 8am and 5pm are managed by the Acute Physicians. Out of hours emergency admissions are managed by 24 general medical consultants (which includes the Acute Physicians). Frail elderly patients are managed by the Frailty Flying Squad, MNPs and Care of the Elderly consultants. The on-take Specialist Registrar is responsible for running the integrated 'take' and works with the acute medicine team.
The team works a full shift pattern to provide cover for the medical take and wards supported by the ward medical teams.
