Full Job Description
Barnsley College boasts a large estate with outstanding facilities for students, staff, and visitors. To maintain and enhance our environment, we are looking for an experienced Multi-Trade Technician to join our expanding Estates department. Our Estates department is responsible for the upkeep of 17 buildings, primarily based in the town centre, with additional campuses further afield. With a team of around 75 staff, including cleaning, maintenance, and office support, we work together to ensure our facilities remain safe, functional, and welcoming. In this role, you will play a key part in both reactive and planned preventative maintenance, tackling a wide variety of tasks that keep our buildings and equipment in top condition. No two days are the same, offering a dynamic and varied workload with plenty of opportunities to develop your skills. Working hours are flexible, and you will be part of the on-call rota. To support you in your role, we provide transport and all the necessary tools. You will also collaborate with our partners and contractors to ensure our facilities run smoothly and efficiently. There may also be occasions where you assist with enquiries from external stakeholders. Compliance is also an important aspect of the role, but full training will be provided to ensure you are equipped with the knowledge and skills required. This is a great opportunity to be part of a dedicated team committed to delivering high-quality maintenance and support across our campuses.
We are looking for a skilled and hands-on Multi-Trade Technician with experience in building maintenance, plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, or a similar trade. You should be confident carrying out repairs, troubleshooting issues, and completing both planned and reactive maintenance tasks across a variety of buildings and equipment. This is a fast-paced and varied role, so you need to be adaptable, organised, and able to manage multiple tasks effectively. As part of the on-call rota, flexibility is also important, and you should be comfortable responding to urgent maintenance needs when required. We are seeking a practical, hands-on individual who is eager to expand their knowledge in unfamiliar trades. While a general understanding of plumbing, electrical work, or joinery is essential, you will have the support of our skilled maintenance colleagues and the Maintenance Manager to develop your skills further. You will work closely with colleagues, contractors, and external stakeholders, so strong communication and teamwork skills are essential. Ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations is also a key part of the role, but full training will be provided to support you. Most importantly, we are looking for someone with a proactive attitude, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to maintaining high standards across our estate. Below is a list of some of the key skills, qualifications and experience we are seeking for this exciting opportunity. When submitting your application, please outline how you meet these requirements. Required
- GCSE Maths and English (Level 2) or willingness to work towards.
- PMO, trade-specific, or equivalent qualification, or willingness to obtain.
- Minimum two years' experience in a maintenance role.
- Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical work, and joinery.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Proud member of the Disability Confident employer scheme Disability Confident About Disability Confident A Disability Confident employer will generally offer an interview to any applicant that declares they have a disability and meets the minimum criteria for the job as defined by the employer. It is important to note that in certain recruitment situations such as high-volume, seasonal and high-peak times, the employer may wish to limit the overall numbers of interviews offered to both disabled people and non-disabled people.
