Full Job Description

Clacton PCN has a fantastic opportunity for a general practice assistant (GPA) to join our team on a full-time basis for a fixed term contract for 12 months. This role is offered on 37.5 hours per week over 5 days (with some Saturdays as required) but part-time can be considered. As a general practice assistant, you'll be based in one (or at most two) of our practices, playing a critical role in supporting our GPs and ensuring a positive care experience for the local community. The main duties of this role will include:

  • Administrative support
  • Sort clinical correspondence, coordinate referrals, and book tests and follow-ups.
  • Extract key information from letters, accurately code patient data, and update records.
  • Help free up GP time by managing workflow and prioritising key tasks.
  • Basic clinical tasks
  • Assist with blood pressure checks, urine dipstick testing, ECGs, phlebotomy, and more.
  • Support GPs during immunisations or wound care.
  • Provide clear, compassionate communication to patients regarding procedures and care.
  • Coordination and liaison
  • Act as a vital link between GPs, other clinicians, external agencies, and patients.
  • Ensure seamless patient care across the network by liaising with hospital teams, social services, and community providers.
  • Patient-centred care
  • Treat every patient with respect, kindness, and confidentiality.
  • Direct patients to the most appropriate service or support within the PCN.
  • About the Candidate If you are a well organised person who thrives on a busy working environment, where no two days are the same, then we would love to hear from you.

  • Previous experience in an administrative or healthcare role (GP surgery or primary care experience is highly desirable).
  • Knowledge of patient confidentiality, data protection, and safeguarding principles.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills, with a keen eye for detail.
  • Willingness to undertake or already possess a GP Assistant Certificate (or equivalent).
  • A commitment to teamwork and the ability to work under your own initiative.
  • Desirable:
  • Competency in basic clinical tasks such as phlebotomy and ECG.
  • Familiarity with GP software systems (e.g., EMIS, SystmOne).
  • Understanding of the Quality Outcome Framework (QoF) & Investment and Impact Framework (IIF).
  • Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care or completion of a healthcare assistant course.
  • Additional requirements:
  • Full UK driving licence (for travel between sites, if needed).
  • Flexibility to adapt to the evolving needs of primary care.

Clacton Primary Care Network is a collaborative group of six GP practices (East Lynne Medical Centre, North Clacton Medical Group, Old Road Surgery, Thorpe Surgery, Fronks Road Surgery, and Harewood Surgery) working together to provide high-quality, patient-centred healthcare.

o Help shape patient care in Clacton and ensure that people receive prompt, high-quality support.
  • + Professional development o Access to ongoing training and career progression within the PCN. o Opportunity to gain or develop clinical skills under the guidance of experienced professionals. + Supportive environment o Work alongside a dedicated team of healthcare professionals in a positive, patient-focused setting. o Embrace a role where your contributions are valued and integral to improving healthcare outcomes. + Competitive package o NHS Pension scheme. o Potential for flexible scheduling to accommodate your lifestyle. If you're passionate about delivering high-quality care and excited to play a key part in a forward-thinking primary care network, we'd love to hear from you. Join us at Clacton PCN and help make a positive impact on the health and well-being of our local community!
