Full Job Description
The primary function of this position is to provide support for the Life Science & Bioengineering Center Histology Core and LSBC researchers. The secondary function is to provide support for Life Sciences and Bioengineering Center collaborators (tenants, external parties, etc). This individual is expected to perform histology instrumentation maintenance, develop usage / maintenance instructions, train operators, and provide research guidance / support,
- Provide Histology Core orientation and training on Histology Core instruments to students, faculty, staff, and external collaborators
- Help design experimental protocols and make suggestions
- Participate in educational and training programs
- Provide guidance and support to Primary Investigators for research and teaching programs.
- Guide operators to process tissues samples for histological analysis, including fixation, processing, embedding and sectioning, in paraffin and cryotomy, etc.
- Quality control and assurance on histological analyses.
- Manage the disposal of hazardous waste.
- Maintain the inventory of chemicals and reagents
- Preparation of assorted staining solutions from powders, dyes and concentrated acids and bases, as needed
- Develop protocols / procedures for routine histology processes
- Manage the Histology Core Instrumentation and supplies including initial preventative maintenance, troubleshooting / diagnosis, and sometimes repair
- Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor.
Bachelors Degree required. Graduate degree preferred - Minimum two years experience working in either academics or industry in Histotechnology. Preferred working with undergraduate and graduate students.
- Experience operating, training, and maintaining histology equipment including but not limited to tissue processors, microtomes, embedding stations, and cryostats.
- Ability to troubleshoot issues with equipment and protocols.
- Extensive knowledge of various histological techniques, and their applications
- Ability to work independently
