Full Job Description

We are looking for a senior journalist for the North East and Cumbria digital team. The role will have two key responsibilities - working as both a sub-editor and senior reporter on the team. As a sub you will help us ensure our content is of the highest editorial standard. You will be responsible for checking news stories, features, explainers, analysis, videos and social media posts. You will have a sharp eye for detail and be skilled at crafting tight, accurate and impartial content with the ability to create engaging headlines and intros. You will work alongside reporters to help them create content which engages our audience and helps ensure our content is chosen over that of other media. You will have a good understanding of how to use images to help tell stories. You will have a good understanding of different story treatments and news motivations to come up with creative ways of telling stories and bringing in new audiences. As a reporter you will take the lead on major stories for the news website, and produce a steady stream of original stories which will be told across all our platforms.,

  • Subbing copy for the BBC news website and our social media platforms. That includes ensuring the content is of the highest standards.
  • Taking the reporting lead on major news stories.
  • Ability to come up with a steady stream of original stories which we will tell across all our platforms.
  • Having a thorough understanding of different story treatments to ensure we are telling our stories in ways which engage our audience.
  • You will help ensure we maintain high editorial standards across all our content.
  • You will work with journalists on the team and guide them through story choice, writing style and editorial and legal queries.
  • Helping us meet daily story quotas while also maintaining high standards in terms of story choice and treatments.

You will have significant experience of working on digital or print platforms and in a daily news environment.
  • You will have a thorough understanding of how to tell stories on digital platforms - on a news website and on social media platforms.
  • An ability to remain calm under pressure and meet tight deadlines while overseeing and producing tight and accurate copy is essential.
  • You will have a thorough understanding of media law and editorial guidelines and be able to make decisions of editorial sensitivity under pressure.
  • An ability to guide journalists through stories by suggesting headlines, top lines, pictures and story treatment is important.
  • You will have a thorough understanding of social listening and using news motivations to come up with ideas for content which will appeal to our existing audience and attract people who would not usually choose the BBC.
  • You will have a love of reporting local stories and a desire to be creative and innovative in the way we tell them.
  • A love of embracing new technology, adopting news skill sand adapting to the constantly changing demands of the digital working environment are also important.

The BBC is committed to redeploying employees seeking suitable alternative employment within the BBC for different reasons and they will be given priority consideration ahead of other applicants. Priority consideration means for those employees seeking redeployment their application will be considered alongside anyone else at risk of redundancy, prior to any individuals being considered who are not at risk.
  • We don't focus simply on what we do - we also care how we do it. Our values and the way we behave are important to us. Please make sure you've read about our values and behaviours here. Diversity matters at the BBC. We have a working environment where we value and respect every individual's unique contribution, enabling all of our employees to thrive and achieve their full potential. We want to attract the broadest range of talented people to be part of the BBC - whether that's to contribute to our programming or our wide range of non-production roles. The more diverse our workforce, the better able we are to respond to and reflect our audiences in all their diversity. We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief. We will consider flexible working requests for all roles, unless operational requirements prevent otherwise.

  • Excellent career progression - the BBC offers great opportunities for employees to seek new challenges and work in different areas of the organisation.
  • Unrivalled training and development opportunities - our in-house Academy hosts a wide range of internal and external courses and certification.
  • Benefits - We offer a negotiable salary package, a flexible 35-hour working week for work-life balance and 25 days annual leave with the option to buy an extra 5 days, a defined pension scheme and discounted dental, health care, gym and much more.
