Full Job Description
You will be responsible to act as Network Rails day-to-day site representative to monitor so that the contractors site activities are conducted in a safe and efficient manner with minimum impact on the environment and operational railway, and the work is of a high standard and in accordance with the relevant specifications and latest practices.
About the role (External)
What will you be doing?
As a Construction Manager you will be responsible for the following:
1. Monitor so that site activities comply with the Guide to Railway Investment Projects (GRIP), relevant rules, regulations, Railway Group and Network Rails company standards and all applicable procedures and legislation.
2. Review in conjunction with the Protection Engineer, the contractors method statements and site-specific risk assessments.
3. Monitor by liaison with appropriate Network Rail personnel whether arrangements for access, possession, storage, worksites etc. have been made to facilitate the efficient completion of work.
4. Monitor by a programme of regular pre-arranged inspections the quality of the contractors work. Instruct contractors in accordance with powers delegated. Where remedial actions are required monitor so that non-conformance reports raised are closed out in an auditable manner. Direct changes as appropriate.
5. Inspect completed works and survey for the readiness of portions of the work for inspection and for the recording of the outcome and the control of any remedial works required.
6. Monitor, by close liaison with the contractor, whether first off examples of elements of the works are jointly inspected at an early opportunity. Agree the detailed workmanship standards for consistent application to the whole of the works.
Monitor the contractors management of site works by regular site meetings at which details of the locations of, nature of, and number of staff to be employed upon each element of the work shall be established for the period until the next meeting.
7. Monitor progress of the works by regular site visits and inspections, comparing work in progress with contract documentation, and information given at site meetings and with the overall contract programme.
8. Maintain a regular and frequent site presence at all worksites and to continually monitor, and correct where necessary, the standard and methods of work, being always vigilant for inadequacies. Maintain site diary as appropriate.
9. Encourage an awareness of the importance of HSQE and good workmanship by regular communication with all contractors site staff
10. Monitor and assess the competence of contractors staff prior to and during all phases of work.
11. Check whether the contractor complies with Network Rail policy in accident/incident reporting and investigation, and assist with conducting investigations.
12. Locally agree site records and freight haulage claims with the contractor for payment purposes.
13. Provides functional support to Development Managers and Project Managers as directed.
· Relevant successful construction experience in railway industry.
· Environmental awareness.
· Driver for behavioural change.
· Good communication skills.
· Commercial awareness.
· Ability to manage a principal contractor and their subcontractors.
· CSCS/CITB scheme/Nebosh certificate.
Its not mandatory to have the below, but it would be desirable to have:
· Safety management awareness/training.
· Six Sigma Yellow Belt.

Our Route
Central route is at the heart of Britains railway. The route covers a major part of the national rail network and is a key commuter line in and out of Birmingham, with hundreds of thousands of passengers, and thousands of tonnes of freight carried within our route each week. Within our route is the Chiltern Main Line between London Marylebone and the West Midlands, the Snow Hill line from Stratford-upon-Avon to Worcester, the Cross City line in Birmingham, and lines to other cities including Wolverhampton, Coventry, Walsall, and Oxford.
We are home to Birmingham New Street station, the busiest station outside of London with more than 170,000 passengers using it every day.
Salary: starting from £43,588 raising to £50,018 per annum. Network Rail adheres to a structured pay framework, any salary offered will be within the pay range advertised.
