Full Job Description
The successful applicant for this position will lead the Controls & Software team, with overall responsibility for engine software for IPSD-Medium engines, including core engine, generic industrial, electric power and military application. This position offers the opportunity to lead and work with a high performing team, delivering a critical part of some exciting new and existing engine development programmes. Responsibilities will encompass controls and software technology development for diesel and alternative fuel engines and hybrid power systems, as well as growing your management skills through leading, influencing and developing a significant, highly-capable and engaged technical team . What You Will Do
- Develop and maintain a strong understanding of the controls and software development needs of all customer programs, taking a lead role in defining how CAT Electronics can cost effectively support those needs with both quality and velocity.
- Manage the team of engineers working on controls and software development to meet identified needs, planning individual assignments, assigning job goals, coaching team members and working with the team to solve problems, remove roadblocks etc.
- Provide strong and effective leadership for the Controls and Software team, deploying your leadership skills to maintain and grow the high levels of engagement already in place.
- Scope of responsibilities to include (but not limited to) performance management and development, career progression, and pastoral care.
- Work with process partner teams (primarily IPSD-Medium) to understand program requirements year-on-year, estimating and agreeing resource requirements and budgets.
- Assign resources within the team, determining any gaps vs budget and undertaking recruitment (where necessary) to fill identified gaps. This activity may encompass permanent or agency recruitment, or use of contract engineering resource and will be part of division-wide activity to manage resources and maximise opportunity across the wider team.
- Work with peers in other locations, engaged in the same customer programs, to manage overall delivery.
- Seek out and develop opportunities to execute activity in other locations, to take advantage of available expertise, improve recruitment opportunity and/or lower cost. This activity will encompass a focus on supporting and developing a Lower Cost Country strategy.
- Work with the local team, particularly the team leads, to identify process improvement opportunities and lead / coach the team as they apply lean principles to improving processes and solving process problems.
- Working as part of the CAT Electronics European Division 'first line' management, take an active role in supporting the Engineering Director with the overall running of the team, establishing and communicating division goals, planning resources, managing infrastructure and facilities, managing people and opportunities and ensuring consistency of employee experience across the wider division.

- Strong technical background (good technical degree preferred in mechanical, electronic, electrical, control systems or automotive engineering) though other qualifications / experience will be considered.
- Experience of the processes deployed within Caterpillar for model-based software design and development to create embedded software. Familiarity with the tools used (Matlab/Simulink, GiT, CANape, HiL, SimApp etc) but direct experience of using these tools not essential.
- Ability to understand customer requirements, program plans and objectives and how to help the team understand and plan effective activity to meet these requirements.
- Knowledge of functional safety, software FMEA, verification and validation processes.

- Good understanding of control systems development, ideally for internal combustion engines.
- Experience of industry standard software processes and practices, e.g. V-cycle, Agile.
- Experience of the deployment of SiL and HiL for robust software verification.
- Some familiarity with software version control systems, for example GiT or Clearcase.
- Knowledge of / prior experience of developing software to meet functional safety requirements.
