Full Job Description

The PE & Sports Department comprises six full-time and three part-time teachers and coaches of PE and sport. In addition, the department is supported by other members of staff who coach a range of school teams. Teachers in the department are dedicated and highly committed to their teaching and coaching of teams. They strive to produce the very best from each pupil, whilst developing young sportsmen and women who work together and for each other. School teams set high standards as ambassadors for the School in every respect. Job Overview: West Buckland School is looking to appoint an ambitious and passionate individual as our next Head of Rugby. We are seeking a talented and motivational rugby coach to lead all aspects of our school's rugby provision across our 3-18 age range; someone who shares our passion and ambition for the sport at all levels. Sport is at the heart of our commitment to provide a holistic education to our pupils. The Head of Rugby will want to promote ways in which colleagues from other sports and academic subjects can be developed as coaches, to ensure that their rugby experience is a positive one. We believe that sport has a major part to play in the education of our pupils and we wish to develop strong links with local clubs, a competitive fixture list and well-organised sports tours to assist in player retention and recruitment in our Rugby loving area of the country. The Head of Rugby will drive the sport forward as well as supporting sport more widely across the school. The successful candidate will make a significant contribution to other school sports, and have a willingness and ability to contribute to the management of our elite athletes. The ability to teach PE lessons, or another academic subject, is an advantage but not essential. A Rugby coaching qualification or equivalent experience is essential. They will be an outstanding coach, great communicator, strategic thinker and will value the opportunity to develop their management skills. This role requires energy, determination, commitment and the ability to work and lead a team. We welcome applications from experienced coaches, current teachers and former elite players from a variety of backgrounds who can meet our commitment to rugby. Experience of Independent schools is beneficial but not essential. Job Requirements:

  • Lead and manage the Rugby programme within the framework of an evolving Games programme
  • Create an environment where students and staff enjoy taking part and develop positive life-long habits and attitudes to sport
  • Develop a progressive programme to guide coaching throughout the Senior & Prep School
  • Oversee the organisation of our Senior games programme for years 11 to 13
  • Fixtures management:
  • Manage the organisation and delivery of the programme for Rugby alongside colleagues, including liaison with the grounds team
  • Develop the rugby fixture list, for all year groups, to ensure the correct balance of fixtures enables all level of participation along with entry in county, regional and national competitions
  • Organise a regular programme of pre-season training in coordination with other sports, the Assistant Head Co-curricular and the lettings manager
  • Organise sports tours through the Assistant Head Co-curricular in line with the tours & trips programme, which may occur in school holidays
  • Management and Administration:
  • Coordinate and implement the Extra-curricular Activity (ECA) programme in Rugby
  • Update the risk assessment on an annual basis.
  • Ensure compliance with the current teaching and governing body standards.
  • Comply with the policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection
  • Ensure medical cover is in place for home Rugby fixtures
  • Ensure the weekly senior Games programme for years 11 - 13 runs smoothly
  • Contribute to the overall success of the Games department
  • Staff development:
  • Attend INSET for continued professional development and recommend CPD training for coaches under your charge.
  • Keep abreast of developments in Rugby and its coaching methods.. Staff should also participate in arrangements within the agreed framework for review and professional development, including INSET
  • Manage your sports budget
  • Check and maintain your sports equipment and order equipment and kit as required
  • Coaching:
  • Monitor and develop advanced training programmes for pupils on sports scholarship and/or in the Sports Performance Programme linked with Rugby
  • Contribute to the induction and support of new and probationary coaches when appropriate
  • Manage your sports coaches on a day-to-day basis
  • Run regular meetings for coaching staff
  • Commitment to continuing career and professional development
  • Willingness to be involved in other activities as directed
  • Manage video analysis process for rugby
  • Outreach & marketing:
  • Work proactively to recruit high-level rugby players to West Buckland, including developing links with local and performance clubs, academies and associated development pathway opportunities
  • Liaise with feeder prep/primary schools building relationships by offering coaching and refereeing sessions
  • Organise and run prep/primary school, county and regional tournaments
  • Represent West Buckland at national and regional events and conferences

  • A proven track record of inspiring other to excel in their roles and clear vision for rugby; E
  • Experience of managing a department or groups effectively D
  • Essential Key Skills:
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong leadership and delegation skills
  • An ability to employ a range of effective coaching, learning styles and assessment methods to promote development
  • An understanding and use of sports analysis
  • A high degree of administration, time management and organisation efficiency
  • Able to work flexibly and manage workload effectively
  • An ability to manage resources in line with agreed budgets
  • Strong ICT skills and a willingness to learn school systems
  • Expert management skills and a good rapport with students and parents
  • Understanding of pastoral care and safeguarding
  • This permanent post is offered from late-August 2025 when pre-season will run, working during term time, with an expectation of pre-season training, weekend fixtures and sports tours during school holidays.
