Full Job Description
The aim of the fellowship is to improve the evidence base underpinning environmentally sustainable anaesthesia, establish what best practice looks like, define and remove barriers to best practice implementation and to share the findings with the wider anaesthetic and medical communities. All clinical work will be within Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals., This is a 12 month out of programme Fellowship in Environmentally Sustainable Anaesthesia at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals (NUTH). This is to be jointly run between NUTH and the Association of Anaesthetists with input from the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare (CSH). This would comprise a split of 50:50 clinical to academic work with full on-call commitments.
As a flexible working friendly organisation, we want to be sure that you can work in a way that is best for us and for our patients, and for you. Speak to us about how we might be able to accommodate a flexible working arrangement. If it works for the service, we will do our best to make it work for you.
For an informal discussion and further information regarding the opportunity and Directorate, please contact: Ian Baxter on 0191 213 9342, or via email at [email protected], The clinical component would be based between the anaesthetic department and the general critical care unit at the Freeman Hospital (FH) in Newcastle upon Tyne. The Freeman is within the Shelford Group and specialises in major surgery, solid organ transplantation and peri-operative medicine. The successful candidate could expect to gain experience in the following surgical specialities: Hepatobiliary, Vascular, Renal, Urology, ENT, Maxo-Facial, Orthopaedics and General Surgery.
Academic:
Whilst the clinical component will be based solely at the Freeman Hospital the academic portion has the scope to look at all areas within NUTH including cardio-thoracics (FH), and the other specialities contained in the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), Newcastle upon Tyne e.g. obstetrics, neurosurgery, paediatrics, trauma etc. This will allow the fellow to potentially explore all areas that may be relevant to the members of the Association of Anaesthetists. Training will be provided by CSH to facilitate the areas that are being investigated.
It is expected that this will contain a component of novel research and quality improvement projects, with the exact projects to be agreed upon between NUTH and the Association of Anaesthetists Environment and Sustainability Committee. It is expected that the results of these projects will then be presented to the wider anaesthetic community.
Administrative:
Successful applicants will be expected to carry out all administrative tasks allocated to him/her by the clinical director, or clinical supervisor, including keeping of inpatient records, ordering investigations and receiving results.
The fellow will be expected to report to and attend the Association's committee meetings (up to three per year), and regular progress reports from the fellow's educational supervisor will be provided to allow the Association oversight of the work being undertaken.
This post would suit anaesthetic trainees who have a special interest in sustainable healthcare. Applicants should have completed Foundation Training and Core/ACCS Anaesthetic training. This post will provide a solid basis from which to apply for an ST or Consultant post. You must have full GMC registration with a license to practise at time of application. Previous paid NHS work experience is essential.
This post is available from 6 August 2025 until 4 August 2026.
