Full Job Description
The UL Solutions CMIT (Consumer, Medical & Information Technologies) division has an exciting opening available for an EMC Operations Lead in Basingstoke. As a market-leading CoE for EMC & Wireless testing, this is a fantastic opportunity for an aspiring leader or experienced technical leader to oversee a high performing EMC lab team, responsible for EMC testing the latest electronic consumer technology. A pivotal role within the organisation, you will be responsible for the operational activities and efficiency of our Lab Technicians and Engineers. This includes operational efficiency (pricing, profitability, tasks) of the laboratory and day-to-day people management activities. At times, you may also serve as Project Lead and/or Reviewer on customer test programs. The ideal person will possess the ability and desire to be a people leader, demonstrating core values of empathy, positivity, a change/growth mindset and being a good role model to those around you. We also want someone who understands how to utilise data to drive operational efficiency and who understands commercials. Technical experience and knowledge of EMC would be highly desirable, but not essential. Your ability to be a strong people leader is more important.
- Lead a team of laboratory technicians and engineers, ranging from junior technicians through to experienced staff engineers
- Perform analysis of the laboratory operational data - Scope of work vs actual hours, pricing efficiency, margins, profitability, lab & engineering people and task efficiency
- Allocation of staff workload / activities
- Daily direction of staff to ensure the team is as efficient as possible with their daily tasks
- Ensuring that you delegate your activities as a leader to senior members of the team
- Serves as Project Lead or Reviewer on complete test programs covering all testing technologies as assigned.
- Communicates project status and results to clients and sales through frequent contact.
- Holds responsibility for defining project scope, test plan, report review and accuracy, meeting of agreed deadlines, and managing project related activities.
- Studies and understands test standards, testing technology, and regulations for scope of responsibility.
- May represent UL at industry related functions such as seminars, trade shows or standards committees.
- Provides training to lab staff when necessary.
- Finds solutions and supports customer products in lab.
- Manages training to support needed capacity and quality of testing.
- Follows up on contacts from clients and communicates technical issues, Test Standard explanations, certification requirements and UL procedures and requirements.
- Acts to address client concerns and resolve issues for the local office.
- Ensures proper communication and support of the customer needs from the team.
- Supports Sales staff to determine project specifications such as cost, time, and sample requirements by analyzing client input, available supplemental data, and product construction for the local office.
- Works with Sales and customer to negotiate completion dates and sample requirements.
- Meets with key customers to understand activities and needs.
- Sets Goals and provides feedback on achievements through regular communications and Performance Appraisal process for Lab/Engineering Team.
- Responsible for Revenue production for area of responsibility and cost management of the team.
- Understands and evaluates costs to produce revenue.
- Takes actions to adjust or manage costs.
- Integrates continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job for the local office.
- Manages and reviews related internal documents for accuracy.
- Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and follow all physical and digital security practices.
You will either be an aspiring leader who's from a technical background (ideally EMC or similar technical environment involving testing) or an existing leader who has gained some experience leading people, but now wants to do bigger and better things - In the region of 10 years' professional experience in related environments / industries
- You should possess a University Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, Manufacturing Technology, or Physics from an accredited program
- Demonstrates the qualities of a leader - empathy, positivity, a change/growth mindset, being a good role model to those around you
- Excellent communication skills at all levels
- Ability to bring a team together in harmony
- Strong preference for using data. You will understand how to use data to drive operational efficiency, including: scope vs actual work, operational margin, pricing, people and task efficiency
- Good understanding of commercials, including pricing, margins, managing costs to impact revenue etc
