Balance for bosses
You may be a manager who always puts employees first, looking after their health and wellbeing as well as nurturing their professional growth.
But how well do you treat yourself?
Even the boss needs to establish a boundary between their professional and personal life in order to get that perfect work-life balance. If you don’t, work, health, and happiness can all be impacted.
Success and fulfillment in the office and in the home depend upon the ability to set firm boundaries. So let’s get started.
Out-of-hours communication
Responding to emails when you should be catching up on that box set? Taking business calls when you should be tucking into your Sunday dinner? Oh, dear.
You need to remember: what happens in the office, stays in the office.
While sometimes it’s necessary to do business in your downtime, don’t make a habit of it. This is your time so enjoy it.
An unhealthy workplace
You might have the biggest office in the building and the largest desk but are you really comfortable?
The wrong environment – a lack of sunlight, an uncomfortable chair or feeling disconnected from the rest of the staff – can have drastic effects on your physical and mental health.
So throw open the blinds, order a proper chair and leave your door open as a welcome sign for employees to call in and chat.
An inability to step away
When you’re at the helm it’s easy to feel you’re the only one who can steer the company safely.
But the truth is, if you’re doing your job properly, you will have hired the best deputies to take the wheel.
The next step is to trust in their abilities without being tempted to step in every five minutes and micromanage their tasks.
Vulnerable to identity theft
If you’re not careful, you can gradually become your job title. While work and your managerial position are important to happiness and self-esteem, they should never be allowed to steal your identity.
Remind yourself daily: I didn’t get where I am today by being a cog in the machine, I operate the machine.
And, to be blunt, get a life! Having fun outside of work with family and friends not only relieves stress, it defines you as a person.
