Dont wander lonely in the cloud
Ever felt you’ve spent so much time plugged into the matrix that human contact seems a distant memory?
From social media to games to spreadsheets and programming, life behind the virtual curtain can feel isolating at times – especially if you spend most of your working day on a computer.
Research suggests the loneliest workers tend to underperform and quit more often. In the UK alone this is thought to cost employers upwards of £2.5 billion.
Did you know the government even has a specially appointed Minister of Loneliness? Thankfully, there are easy ways to engage more in the workplace and ensure your personal and career health are in tip-top condition.
Switch off
Tech workers often find this difficult. You’re programmed to be switched on.
But taking breaks away from the screen to have a cuppa, a chat with co-workers or even get some fresh air can all be beneficial.
With instant messaging, email and text, it’s easy to communicate with co-workers without ever physically speaking to them – so instead of a constant digital dialogue, take the time to talk through work matters in person.
Get involved
Extra-curricular office activities are a great way to get to know colleagues and build connections.
There’s no need to sign up for weekly paintballing sessions or play rugby with the office tag team.
Friday drinks, a monthly book group, a weekly meeting of the Anime and Cosplay lovers association…whatever tickles your fancy, go with it.
And, if it doesn’t exist, why not be the trailblazer who organises it? Innovation is at the heart of business, after all.
Build connections
Even if you don’t feel lonely, the person next to you may be suffering in silence. Simple, small gestures can really help them.
Take an interest in Gail’s Kung Fu classes or Andy’s passion for tractors. You’ll soon establish a warm, human connection that can mean a lot.
Most of us spend a large proportion of our time at work or thinking about work – it’s only natural we should invest a little time and effort in our work relationships.
