Full Job Description

The council has a long term strategic vision for the waste of the Borough including a 10 year plan for waste, which will be significantly updated in 2025 to focus on reuse and circular economy, reflecting emerging national policies including Extended Producer Responsibility, Deposit Return Scheme, Simpler Recycling and the application of the Emissions Trading Scheme to Energy from Waste.

The council declared a climate emergency in 2019 and has developed a Carbon Net-Zero 2030 Action Plan for the council's operations and the Borough. This builds on former iterations of key climate related plans and the success of reducing the council's carbon footprint by 59% and the Borough's carbon footprint by 49%.

North Tyneside has been recognised as a leader in taking action on climate change and achieved CDP Cities A List status in 2023 and its revised action plan for 2024 will encompass a greater focus on climate risk and adaptation, and emphasis on scope 3 emissions and offsetting/insetting.

The post holder will be responsible for day-to-day contract management and monitoring of all Waste Management Contracts that help to deliver the key strategic objectives of the Council's Waste Strategy.

The management of data is essential in monitoring budgets, making key strategic decisions, evidencing Extended Producer Responsibility payments, informing future procurement of waste contracts and supporting the delivery of the Council's Carbon Net-Zero 2030 Action Plan.

Additionally, the post holder will support the Directorate Senior Management Team in embedding service improvement and business compliance into services, such as developing service improvement plans, developing the approach to business continuity, assessing value for money / efficient and effective tests, and updating key strategies.

A Green North Tyneside is one of five key themes of the Our North Tyneside Council Plan 2021-25. Sustainability is at the heart of everything the council does and its key policymaking.
