Full Job Description
We are currently seeking 2 part time Fisheries Support Officers to join our team in the Greater Manchester, Merseyside & Cheshire area. This exciting and rare opportunity will appeal to individuals who have an interest in working in the natural environment, with the willingness and character to tackle unlicensed angling.
Your focus will be on rod license compliance, but you will also be expected to support the team with other essential work throughout the year.
As a Fisheries Support Officer, you will hold an authorisation under the Salmon & Freshwater Fisheries Act 1975 (SAFFA) and will be empowered as a constable to investigate fisheries rod license offences.
Training will be provided on relevant legislation, and you will be equipped with specialist equipment and PPE.
This role is primarily field-based and will require you to work a minimum of 195 annual hours unsocially. The unsocial hours period is considered between the hours of 19:00 and 07:00 during weekdays and all day during the weekend. This will be averaged across the year to enable seasonal variability based on business need. In recognition of working unsocially, you will receive an allowance as an enhancement in pay.
Effective communication and experience working with diverse groups of people are crucial in this role. Building strong relationships within the team and externally is key.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You are required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training is given. We will work with you to find a role that suits your interests and circumstances.
We are fully committed to having a diverse and inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve.
The team
You'll join a friendly, passionate, and high performing team which delivers the Environment Agency's statutory duty to maintain, improve and develop fisheries.
We achieve this through the principal roles of enforcement, advice and guidance and project management. You will be supported through an appointed mentor and a wide range of training opportunities will be provided to support you in your development.
Experience in enforcement is preferred, but not required. If you do not have these skills but are eager to learn and work in a challenging environment, you will be provided with coaching to help you reach a high standard.
- A passion about the environment and willingness to learn about environmental regulation and enforcement.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Experience with conflict resolution techniques is preferred but not required.
- The ability to work independently & as part of a team whilst delivering your own workload.
- Adaptability is essential for Fisheries Support Officers and you should be comfortable using computer-based systems and be competent keeping accurate records and inputting.
