We are seeking an individual to join the PFAS Pan-Area Team within the Environment Agency's Waste Industry and Regulatory Services (WIRS), part of Environment Regulation and Markets (EM&R). Our evidence shows a widespread presence of PFAS in the water environment. We have an evolving knowledge of potential sources, their fate, behaviour, and toxicological effects and are developing integrated regulatory approaches. This specialist, technical role focuses on the investigation of the sources of PFAS, their impact on surface and groundwater quality, and the regulatory approaches needed to reduce environmental risk. This will be achieved through undertaking PFAS catchment assessments, investigating PFAS priority sites and PFAS releases to the environment. You will also provide expert regulatory support and advice to Area based colleagues, including during incidents. As part of this technical team, you will provide training and coaching to improve awareness and understanding of PFAS risks to operational teams. You will drive collaborative working and deliver targeted and informative communications. You will be a strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills, capable of supporting compliance and enforcement activities as part of a dispersed team. We deliver a variety of technical and compliance related activities across several regulatory regimes; helping to protect and improve the environment. We provide environmental guidance and regulation across the UK and internationally. Key areas of work are chemical compliance and regulation, pollution inventory, hazardous waste, waste tracking, and regulatory returns for waste management.
You will have experience in the regulation or compliance of water quality, regulated industry or waste management with an understanding around managing the risks to groundwater and surface waters. Qualified to at least degree level in a relevant discipline; chartered or working towards chartership is desirable. You will be familiar with and have experience of one or more of the following:
- Environmental Permitting Regulations
- Supporting compliance and enforcement
- Water quality investigations and analysis
- Waste management
- Environmental incident response
- Data and information analysis
- Groundwater chemistry, quality, and contaminant transport
- Land contamination risk assessment and remediation.
- Hydrogeology, constructing and interpreting conceptual models hydrogeological risk assessment.
- The technical frameworks and approaches by which land contamination is managed. You will confidently deal with a wide range of information requests from both internal and external customers.
