Full Job Description
As a 3rd Line Network Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in maintaining, supporting, and developing DHU's IT network infrastructure and systems to meet the demands of our 24/7 365 day operational environment. Working closely with our vendors and partner providers, you will ensure optimal system availability to support the critical services we deliver. Beyond technical support, you will act as a key problem-solver and communicator, capable of working effectively under pressure in a dynamic and fast-paced setting. This role requires you to provide essential on-site IT services as part of a 7-day working pattern, including bank holidays, with on-call responsibilities to address and resolve service incidents swiftly. - Support the deployment and configuration of a range of layer 2 and layer 3 network elements such as routers, switches, firewalls and VPNs
- Perform in-life operational activities of network elements, including hardware and software upgrades, security configuration and patching, and technology refresh
- Perform hands-on configuration of networking hardware adhering to approved procedures and processes
- Provision of 3rd line support to Service Management team
- Lead identified strategic infrastructure projects in support of DHU's wider digital strategy.
- Lead the investigation and resolution of identified systemic issues in response to service events
- Work on-site at data centre locations when necessary
- Diagnosis and resolution of network faults, including escalations from our helpdesk
- Working in collaboration with our current 3rd party network provider and any 3rd party vendors where necessary
- Liaise with service partners and customers
- Proactively handle support cases assigned to you
- Working with both technical and non-technical staff as the key point of contact
- Ensure SLAs are met, documentation is correct, and policies/procedures are in place
Networking qualification such as CCNA, CCNP or JNCIP - Educated to NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in an IT related subject or equivalent gained through specific relevant experience
- Good general level of education with a minimum of Mathematics and English GCSE
- Full UK Driving Licence and access to own vehicle (travel mileage to site covered by expenses)
- Excellent verbal communication skills, specifically able to communicate technical information in simple language to end users
- A minimum of 3 years' network engineering experience
- Understanding of copper and fibre networking
- Experience of planning and installing LAN/WAN networks
- Experience configuring Juniper, Aruba devices and Cisco firewalls
- Good knowledge of: IPv4 and IPv6 routing protocols (internal and external), LAN, VLAN, EVPN, MPLS, VPLS, VXLAN, DHCP and DNS
- Proven experience with L2 and L3 network tools, monitoring, and troubleshooting techniques on IPv4 and IPv6 networks
- Proven experience monitoring network performance and contributing to remedial plans addressing performance shortfalls
- Ability to resolve complex problems
- Demonstrable working knowledge of Network Management Systems
- Right to work in the UK
