Full Job Description

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Advanced Specialist Orthoptist, Stroke Co-Lead at Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (ASPH). This is an exciting role to increase Orthoptic input to the stroke service at ASPH. The post-holder will be partly ward-based, working in the stroke multi-disciplinary team (MDT), and partly based in Ophthalmology outpatients undertaking assessments of stroke patients. The Trust's main two sites are Ashford Hospital and St. Peter's Hospital and we also provide services at Woking Community Hospital. Day case surgery takes place in dedicated theatres at Ashford Hospital with Paediatric and other selected surgeries at St Peter's Hospital. We are a forward-looking department with a team of 19 medical staff including 1 with an interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Ocular Motility and 1 Paediatric Optometrist.,

  • To provide high quality Orthoptic care as an autonomous advanced practitioner. To assess, diagnose and manage all categories of patients referred to the Orthoptic service provided by ASPH.
  • To support the Head Orthoptist to maintain effective and efficient Orthoptic services at ASPH NHS Foundation Trust including the provision of the secondary visual screening service.
  • The post holder will work as part of a multi-disciplinary Orthoptic and Ophthalmology team that provide a comprehensive and quality Orthoptic Service for the Trust.
  • The post-holder will co-lead the Stroke and Brain Injury service and liaise with the Head Orthoptist and Consultant Ophthalmologist as required.
  • They will participate in the educational activities ran by and ran for the Orthoptic Department. This includes the teaching of Orthoptic undergraduates, Medical undergraduates, Junior doctors and Pre-registration Optometrists.
  • To deputise for the Head Orthoptist either single-handedly or in conjunction with other band 7 colleagues.
  • To carry out any other duties that reasonably fit within the broad scope of a job of this grade and type of work.
