Full Job Description

The Pharmacy Education Specialist is responsible for developing, managing, and delivering high-quality undergraduate pharmacy education and training programs within the Trust. This role involves collaborating with academic institutions, the NHS, and other stakeholders to ensure the training programs meet the required standards and the needs of the students. The Specialist will lead the coordination delivery and evaluation of placement programs, provide induction and training support and contribute to the development of inter-professional learning opportunities. Additionally, they will be responsible for delivering a comprehensive program of practice-based clinical teaching for undergraduate pharmacy and medical students, including the design of assessment tools and the provision of training and support for supervising staff.

  • Collaboratively develop with regional tutors a hospital training program and develop/manage/deliver the pharmacy education curricula.

  • Coordinate pharmacy student placements and ensure quality standards are met.

  • Provide induction training and act as a tutor for pharmacy trainees and students.

  • Collaborate with education providers and stakeholders to optimize training programs.

  • Develop and implement quality assurance systems for undergraduate pharmacy training

  • Deliver practice-based clinical teaching for pharmacy and medical students.

  • Support the undergraduate Medical Education pharmacy program.

  • Design assessment tools and provide training for staff overseeing student assessments.

    1. Determine the requirements for undergraduate pharmacy training programs within the Trust in conjunction with the Pharmacy Education & Training, School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences (University of Central Lancashire) Education & Training team, the NHSE and with reference to the GPHC standards.
    2. Work with the Medical Education Specialist pharmacist to develop, manage, deliver and evaluate of prescribing and therapeutics for undergraduate and postgraduate students from UCLAN and medical students from University of Manchester.
    3. Develop the placement training programme/syllabus to ensure the identified needs of the students are met and the requirements of the education providers and other stakeholders are fulfilled.
    4. Lead and co-ordinate the delivery of the UCLAN placement programme, engaging other appropriate pharmacists and health professionals as required.
    5. Work in partnership with the HEI's and the NHSE to ensure the undergraduate placement programmes are delivered to the required standard.
    6. Develop quality assurance (QA) systems to evaluate the effectiveness of all pharmacy aspects of undergraduate training.
    7. Provide induction training on safe prescribing and medicines optimisation for all new staff to the Trust as required by the Education & Training team.
    8. Act as a tutor for Foundation pharmacists or Pharmacists studying for a post graduate diploma in clinical pharmacy or clinical pharmacy practice, ensuring the students' needs are met and the requirements of the education providers are adhered to.
    9. Work closely with the pharmacy Education and Governance teams to ensure that appropriate training and assessment is provided in relation to medicines management and safe medication use and feed this into all aspects of medical education.
    10. Identify opportunities for, and with the assistance of the Pharmacy Education & Training team, establishing inter-professional learning where appropriate.
    11. To deliver a programme of practice-based clinical teaching for undergraduate student pharmacists on the MPharm degree course at the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences (University of Central Lancashire).
    12. To work with other Clinical Tutors and the Placement Team at the university to continually develop and evaluate the programme of practice-based clinical teaching.
    13. To ensure the skills for providing person-centred care, medicines optimisation / pharmaceutical care, and safe and effective prescribing are taught and assessed within the practice-based clinical teaching programme, including necessary clinical assessment skills.
    14. To develop and use appropriate assessment tools to enable student pharmacists to demonstrate their clinical knowledge and skills.
    15. To provide appropriate training and support for all staff involved with supervising and assessing student pharmacists.
