Full Job Description

If you are passionate about improving local air quality and are keen to make a meaningful contribution to public health, then this could be the perfect role for you.

As our Air Quality Officer, you will join our friendly Pollution Control Team located within the Public Health Department at Sandwell Council, in the heart of the West Midlands.

As part of our team, you will be tasked with protecting and improving the health of our community by reducing air pollution through a wide variety of mechanisms, from the use of traditional legislative enforcement to creating campaigns focused on encouraging behaviour change and undertaking partnership working with the NHS, schools, and local community groups.

In this post, you will help shape and deliver Sandwell Council's air quality objectives and play a key role in developing our next Air Quality Action Plan.

You will work collaboratively with various teams and partners across the Council, as well as external organisations, including education, faith and community groups and will have responsibility for promoting, managing, and monitoring a wide variety of air quality initiatives.

You will be required to review and assess air quality data and produce formal reports, facilitate, and support community engagement activities, present information to a wide range of audiences, promote active and sustainable travel initiatives, investigate local air quality concerns including potential statutory nuisances, and respond to planning proposals relating to air quality.

The ability to foster and maintain effective partnerships with a wide range of stakeholders is essential in this role, as well as being willing to contribute your own ideas to help encourage and inspire others to support Sandwell Council's ambitions to improve local air quality.

Our offer to you:

We are committed to the development of everyone in our team and we want you to grow your skills and confidence with us.

We will support you through regular team meetings and away days as well as regular one to one meetings with your line manager where we can identify relevant training and continuous professional development opportunities for you.

We are looking for an experienced and suitably qualified Environmental Health Officer registered with either the Environmental Health Registration Board or a relevant qualification and a minimum of two years post-qualification experience.

The council operates hybrid working. This involves working from an agreed workplace location in the borough for at least two days a week.
