Full Job Description
The department provides clinical anaesthesia and intensive care services for all the surgical specialties to be expected in a large district general hospital. Programmes can be developed to suit individual requirements. Trust Doctors can continue with preparation for the FRCA examination, if necessary. Attendance at FRCA teaching can be supported where possible.
Successful candidates with the fellowship can expect to contribute to the teaching and supervision of less experienced colleagues.
There is an academic half day each month when no elective surgery takes place; these feature audit presentations, clinical governance, presentations by visiting lecturers and meetings with other departments., Trust Doctors assist with the provision of the clinical services for elective and emergency surgical and other procedures, and related investigations, requiring general and regional anaesthesia, sedation, resuscitation, etc. They are on-call for emergencies in accordance with full shift rotas published each week in advance approximating to a 1:10 with prospective cover. 1:10 for long days (8am - 9pm) and 1:10 for night duties (8pm - 9am). Supervision, assistance or advice appropriate to the candidate's level of experience is available at all times.
The daily commitment also includes pre-operative assessment and postoperative care,
including the provision of acute pain relief.
Description of Working Pattern
The post complies with the hours limitations of the Agreement on Junior Doctors' Hours. The
department operates work patterns according to the expected workload. Out of hours responsibilities involve covering either the obstetric or the intensive care units and giving supervision to the Core trainees in the operating department. The Trust may require you to work at any of the hospital sites, although we avoid the need to work across two sites in 1 day wherever possible. Supervision (Immediate, Local or Distant) is provided by the 'starred' Anaesthetic Consultant of the Day for theatres and the Duty Consultant(s) for ICU on each site. The department uses the CLWRota management system, and supervising/mentoring consultants are clearly indicated via this system during 'solo' anaesthetic lists.
