Full Job Description

Epsom and St Helier Hospitals NHS Trust has an exciting opportunity for an Anatomical Pathology Assistant to join the mortuary at Epsom General Hospital, with the possibility of working at St Helier Hospital, Carshalton when required.

Full mortuary services are provided on both Epsom and St Helier sites, with the autopsy service being provided at St Helier Hospital.

Applications are invited for the post of Anatomical Pathology Assistant . We are looking for an individual to join our motivated and enthusiastic team that will contribute to upholding and improving upon our quality service. The applicant must be able to work as part of a team or alone. The applicant must have excellent communication skills and display meticulous attention to detail with the ability to recall complex information and be willing to participate in all activities related to the mortuary.

The duties are physically and mentally demanding with some aspects of the role requiring participation in the departmental quality management system. Physical aspects require moving and handling of patients, family viewings and, on occasion, preparation of the deceased for autopsy examination. An essential quality is an empathic approach towards the bereaved.

There may be the opportunity to take part in the on-call rota to cover periods of annual leave and sickness.

St George's, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group cares for a population of four million people in South West London and North East Surrey. Our sites include St George's Hospital, one of 11 major trauma centres in the UK and the largest healthcare provider and major teaching hospital in the area; St Helier Hospital, home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary's Hospital for Children; and Epsom Hospital, home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC).

After years of collaboration, our two Trusts became a hospitals group in 2021. While remaining as two separate Trusts, being a hospitals group will help us to collaborate more closely on research, and the development, education, and training of our 17,000-strong workforce.

The mortuary provides an autopsy service at St Helier to the local Coroner and Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust Hospitals handling 360 Coroners and the occasional hospital autopsy.
