As an apprentice dental nurse you will shadow and work alongside our experienced Dental team to gain all the knowledge required to sit the National Diploma provided by the national examination board for dental nurses(NEBDN) This will involve 4 days of your working week in the clinical environment and 1 day personal study.

  • The Apprentice Dental Nurse will work closely with the Education Lead during the provision of high quality dental care to patients of all ages who have a variety of special needs. These include mental health problems, medically and/or physically compromised patients.
  • The Apprentice Dental Nurse will learn all the practical and theory skills to enable them to work in the dental environment
  • The Apprentice Dental Nurse will learn the skills and knowledge to work collaboratively with other clinics within the Special Care Dental service to meet the needs of patients
  • The Apprentice Dental Nurses will learn to understand the importance clinical governance, audit and quality improvement. As an Apprentice Dental Nurse the postholder will be supported by the Education Lead and wider dental team
  • The Apprentice Dental nurses will be allocated a clinic mentor for day to day support
  • Accompany the dentist and qualified nurse on domiciliary visits and handle of domiciliary equipment using trolleys where necessary.

  • Understand the importance of how to prepare the surgery efficiently at the beginning of the session, maintain a clean working environment throughout and clear away at the end of the session
  • Be able to demonstrate how all equipment is cleaned, decontaminated and sterilised in line with policies such as HTM01-05 and Dental IPC policy
  • Maintain correct storage arrangements in line with all policies
  • Adopt practices to minimise exposure to body fluids, infected waste, radiation, chemical hazards (e.g. mercury, cleaning materials etc.) and needle stick injuries by adhering to all departmental procedural policies.
  • Gain knowledge for the safe handling and storage of dental instruments and materials by ensuring that all possible security policies and procedures are adhered to.
  • Gain the skills to process and mount dental radiographs using the appropriate equipment and chemicals.
  • Change x-ray developing fluids when necessary.
  • Through learning the Apprentice Dental Nurse will understand the importance of the Mental Capacity Act guidance, Safeguarding, Infection and prevention and all relevant policies and procedures
  • The Apprentice Nurse will complete all mandatory training as set by the Apprenticeship programme and HCT
  • Understand the importance of the safe use of products covered by COSHH regulation
