Highways Maintenance is responsible for the construction and maintenance of all highways within the City of Bradford MDC together with Winter Maintenance operations. The Department of Place are looking for three Apprentices to join the Highway Maintenance section. There are two vacancies at our Depot based at Wakefield Road, Bradford and one vacancy at Stockbridge Depot, Keighley. The main purpose of the role:- To undertake an Apprenticeship Scheme within the Department of Place for which the main purpose of the role is to:-
- You will work as part of a team carrying out highways including reconstruction of footways and carriageways, drainage works and winter maintenance operations.
- Each Apprentice will join a team involved on highway construction activities, including kerbing, flagging and laying tarmac. You will also be trained to operate mechanical plant i.e. Rollers, road saws, compressors, kerb and paving saws. Successful applicants will receive practical work experience, on the job training and be required to attend Construction and Plant Assessments based in Doncaster. Therefore you must be willing to travel to Doncaster when required. In addition, you will also be required to take responsibility for your studies, complete elements of coursework in our own time to meet set deadlines and cope with exams and assignments. To be accepted onto the course you must first pass a CITB Pre-screening test. Successful candidates will then be invited to interviews. The apprentice will follow a programme of training relating to the role and achieve the appropriate skills, competencies and qualifications of the role by the end of the training programme. We are looking for individuals who are committed to undertaking an Apprenticeship in Construction Plant Operative Level 2. To qualify for the apprenticeship you must have GCSE Maths and English at Grades A-C or 4-9 or a minimum of Entry level 3 or above in Maths and English. (An assessment will take place before the interview stage). Please note that if a candidate possesses a qualification at the same level or at a higher level in the same specific subject area as the advertised apprenticeship the candidate would not be eligible for apprenticeship funding and therefore must not apply. If unsure please enquire. To meet the apprenticeship funding requirements, you must be entitled to work in the UK and have been a resident for 3 years. Bradford Council will provide you with sufficient time, the working environment, training and the range of job activities within where it is possible for you to complete your full apprenticeship. Working for the Council you will have a starting amount of 25 days paid annual leave (pro rata) plus 8 bank holidays (pro rata), access to the credit union, discounted - public transport passes/car parks and other benefits.
